Front yard landscaping

Hi! Looking for suggestions for adding a little interest and a bit of privacy across the front of our yard. The yard goes right up to the street and we have a neighbor directly across. It is a quiet street but still, we use the front yard a lot with our kids and feel a bit exposed. NY, Zone 5b. Thank you!

Wow, what a great yard! Your kids are so lucky to have all that space.

Are your well & septic field in front? I'm hoping you have space for a couple of blue spruce near the road without getting too close to the septic field.

Your general location and zone will be needed to make the best plant suggestions. Size and form wise I'm thinking a Spirea is a good option. Get rid of the middle stick bush in front of the bay window too.

If rambler is the same as ranch i think it could look great. Our current and past ranch style houses both had stone mulch with drought tolerant plants and succulants front and back and it is attractive. On the other hand if you are thinking thirstier plants then it might look better and be better for your plants to replace your stones with bark mulch. You didnt ask but do you love the white railing? Painted a darker color would look so much better IMHO.

When to prune a hydrangea depends on the species and whether it blooms on new wood or old wood. Here is one ARTICLE. If you pruned the first year at the wrong time, they might not bloom the second year. Hydrangeas are said to live up to 50 years if properly cared for. If they don't bloom this year, you should check with a local nursery on what could be wrong.

Plant with a low-growing meadow: No one can give you much advice on what plants to use, as we need a zone and major city. While I like pinks and purples, you can do this with whites or yellows, too. These all have paths through them, but the basic idea is a large area of low-growing plants. Some are evergreen, like heathers, you can include some very low-growing junipers or other needled evergreens. Short grasses look good year round, too. adding rocks would be nice

You certainly have the room to put in a mixed shrub border across the front. I'd do a mix of evergreen and deciduous species.

But I'd skip any blue spruces :-) Picea glauca is overly prone to needlecasts and diseases pretty much anywhere east of the Rockies because of adverse climate conditions - too hot and humid in summer and too much rain.

In a somewhat similar situation, we found that a simple split-rail fence was all that was needed. Just something to give a sense of separation from the road.

Something I was very aware of, was not planting things that were going to eat up too much of the yard. I wanted to preserve space for croquet, badminton - things that take up a fair amount of space. There is also the question of how much do you want to hide the house from the road.
