Richard - plant color combinations are my favorite part of gardening, and one of the reasons that I think that the OG has done such a good job with their conifer collection is that they have taken such care with plant placement with regard to color, shape, form, etc. You will enjoy your visit if you find yourself there! And so many other spots to visit nearby, as well. There are some really cool 'Pendulums' in Oregon - they are more like creatures than plants. Comments (16)Definitely not removing the landscaping and installing sod. One thing I noticed about some of the best landscaping I have seen is repeated elements... the repeat of a type of bush throughout the landscape which is opposite to the "one of these" and "one of those" collections we are all guilty of. I've taken the new mantra of buying multiples of nearly everything and the impact is more more positive. I think you can get away with a "one of" as a focal point, but if you have a group of three of them the impact is much more aesthetically pleasing. I think the take-home is that they not appear specifically next to each other, but are repeated within a given view. One thing I have done is to make very wide, sweeping beds that are deep and allow some interest in depth instead of plants lined up like soldiers. But that isn't snow, I could show you snow. 8^)
In my climate, I'm generally limited to Spruce, Thuja, Pine, Taxus and Juniper straight species, so I won't bore you with all the ordinary but just having something green to look at helps, at least for me it does. :-)
P. banksiana started from a witch's broom cone seed that so far appears to be following form of the parent, with leaders sprouting in random directions. If it keeps this up, it will look like the original broom, which was pretty dense with short branches:

One of my pet favorites, even though it's native to MN, getting difficult to find.

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."I used to 'Hand Stamp' as part of my job at a specialty company.
The cheap stamps I bought at Harbor Freight aren't the highest quality. The lettering is not perfectly straight because of that. But anyone can use good stamps, right?
I used solid copper (scrap pipe) so should last a while (read forever).I think I made ~50 tags but I lost count and I even had to redo a few of them for various reasons.
This is what my work bench looked like last August. Deja Vue.
I silver soldered thick copper wire (#14ga) onto the back side for 'stems'.
Works for me. :-)

2 months agoEven though we in the northland can't show current pictures of green plants looking beautiful. We can go to where summer resides year round. Here's a few pictures from the Marjorie K. Daughtery conservatory near Omaha in December.
