Remodeling Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Mirror placement above vanity

I recently purchased a home and am doing some renovations. I would love to eliminate the center mirror and light above but feel that I would then need to center the remaining two mirrors over each sink. If I do this then I’m concerned it would look like an error since the sinks aren’t centered on their “section” of the vanity. I do not want to tear out the cabinet, countertop, or sinks.

Thanks for your opinions! Andrea... I don't think I'l have enough space to have side sconces and a vanity light. It's an alcove that is just 37" wide so it might get a little crowded. Would you center the vanity light over the 30" mirror or over the sink? Les... That might be an interesting way to disguise the angle, I like it! Nanny... What a great mirror! I'd like to use my vanity light if possible though because it can't be returned. (Although, I do own an extra sconce already so if I could get them to exchange the vanity light for a sconce...!) Thanks, everyone! Any other opinions? I have a decorator/friend coming this week to look at some other things in my house so I'll probably see what she thinks too.

Without photos, I am going to semi-guess here, but if you have recessed in the bathroom, you probably could go with sconces on the full length mirror, they will provide the proper fill light for applying makeup or shaving. Overhead light creates shadowing on the face. If you decide to do this, then the sconces must be selected, placement on the wall determined and the mirror laser cut for the opening to the electrical box. You cannot install sconces on a mirror after the fact, you will crack the mirror. Builder should understand this, but discuss it in detail.

Moen 26" Tall Tilting Oval Mirror from the Glenshire Collection Model:DN2692BN ... remove the existing mirror and install this swivel mirror. Yes, it should be centered in your eye sightline. it will cover some of the window, but will look fine. I have done this in past homes for natural light.

So you have a 9" cabinet between the sink bases? You don't have to make the mirrors the full width of the sink base and probably shouldn't for aesthetic reasons. If you used a standard size width of 24" for the mirrors, you should have about 12" of wall space between them, plenty of room for the middle sconce. It gives you about 12" of wall space for each sconce and would be well-balanced. As for height, 50" is huge for a mirror. Are you trying to compensate for a high ceiling? I would leave well enough alone. I think you should change the clear bulbs for coated LEDs to get rid of the glare..

There is no purpose/improvement whatsoever in what you want to do! Leave it alone, change the lighting above and remove middle light if you desire, or change all three lights to something else

It's just a poorly designed vanity. First do no harm: ) and know that you can not improve what was total error to start. There was ZERO reason for the sink to be off center on sink cabinet - for the whole design in fact! it created the issue and there is no good fix. Leave it. Change lights: )

Absolutely changing all the lighting. It’s too glammy for my taste and the shadow casting is horrible. The mirrors will be reframed and raised off the vanity once painting is done and new lights are hung.

Would it be possible to center new mirrors over the two sinks and then replace the existing vanity lighting with wall sconces?

I’ll be the outlier here - I don’t mind the vanity set up at all. The lights - well - they’d be great in a powder room but I can’t imagine managing hair & makeup with all the prisms & shadows. With inset in mid vanity it seems that area is meant for ’close up’ work. I’d change out the lights for sure but I’m on the fence about the center mirror. Looks like 2 outlets in it for appliances. Do you have a need for storage? Is there a case for installing a center appliance garage & shelving - closed or open? Or, is that an appliance garage on left side? Don’t know about matching vanity finish for a new center installed unit. I’d live with the mirror for now but change lighting for sure. Looks like a nice bathroom.

I also do not mind it I would perhaps relieve center mirror by placing a large painting of same size in center with a plant on the counter beneath

I would keep the two outer mirrors in their current position and add something tall to the outside corner of each of them. Then instead of positioning the new sconces over the mirrors, position them in the inside corner. It gives your eye something to focus on other than the sinks being off center.

Just a couple of more possibilities- change the two mirrors to large oval ones or replace them with one large mirror that runs the length. In either case, I think I would still use sconces 3-4 to provide lighting and break up the wall.
