Help with pulling together a living room with a baby grand
Comments (17)Thanks all for the comments so far. Let me see if I can respond: teacats - the chairs I bought first because I liked them and they were on sale! This was before we had even started looking at pianos (I originally thought we were just going to have an upright). I can't really return them so I think I have to work with them for now or maybe move them to another room in the future, if possible. I was disappointed in the rug color - it was a lot darker than the picture online. I still might be able to return it but I'm contemplating that one. It's a nice rug. I may be able to use it in the dining room instead. I was unsure on having the backs of the chairs to the door - you think that would work? The room is about 18' long x 13' wide. Your suggested artwork is very nice as well. I'll keep it in mind! pipdog - I thought about the corner by the window as well but that means the lid opens to the wall and its in the light and by the furnace register. The lamps aren't staying - they are just temporary for now! aktillery - thank you for that post. There are some other options to consider there. I need to figure out how to make a floor plan to scale so I can see if the room is big enough to have the piano more toward the center. I'm afraid for the piano by the window. My parents' black piano faded over time because it was right by a huge picture window (and still is) cyn427 - I'm having a hard time visualizing what you mean. The corner to the left as you walk in? Seems like the piano would stick out in front of the door but maybe I'll have to try it. It's only 5' long (it's a baby baby!)...See MoreHelp with pulling living room together

Comments (3)To advise on various forms of beige and off-white via Internet is difficult. I personally wouldn't suggest trying to find a pure neutral solution, as those work best when you can fully design each color and texture to create the rich look of a successful all-neutral room. But since you're renting, I would advise finding some colors and patterns that can be eyecatchers and they will take your eyes away from the 23 different ways the yellowed version of Navajo White clashes with a cooler tone elsewhere. Throw in a gorgeous tribal kilim or 2 with deep reds, navy, flashes of orange etc. Or whatever your colorway and style profile may be, just get some real patterns and real colors in there. Good luck!...See MoreKitchen renovation_can't seem to find elements to pull it all together
Comments (5)HI there, one of the key "exercises" we do with clients is look at the home's style, region and your lifestyle. First, you typically want to have a kitchen that "matches" the style of your home (Traditional? Modern?). Then, you want to have what the wine growers call a sense of "terroir", that is, the area in which you live (desert? mountain?). You want to have a space that fits into the vernacular, as we designers say. If you have a unique architectural or historic home, you want to have respect for that and express its style, if at least for resale value. For example, if you have a 60s Eichler home (very valued now) you might want to consider recreating that style of kitchen to ensure good saleability. Last but not least, look at your lifestyle: are you casual or formal people? Do you entertain often? Are there kids? These criteria, and more, will help you at least narrow down your choices. Elimination of what you DON'T want is a great step forward! All best!...See Moresteffsophie
