Help with pulling together a living room with a baby grand
Comments (17)Thanks all for the comments so far. Let me see if I can respond: teacats - the chairs I bought first because I liked them and they were on sale! This was before we had even started looking at pianos (I originally thought we were just going to have an upright). I can't really return them so I think I have to work with them for now or maybe move them to another room in the future, if possible. I was disappointed in the rug color - it was a lot darker than the picture online. I still might be able to return it but I'm contemplating that one. It's a nice rug. I may be able to use it in the dining room instead. I was unsure on having the backs of the chairs to the door - you think that would work? The room is about 18' long x 13' wide. Your suggested artwork is very nice as well. I'll keep it in mind! pipdog - I thought about the corner by the window as well but that means the lid opens to the wall and its in the light and by the furnace register. The lamps aren't staying - they are just temporary for now! aktillery - thank you for that post. There are some other options to consider there. I need to figure out how to make a floor plan to scale so I can see if the room is big enough to have the piano more toward the center. I'm afraid for the piano by the window. My parents' black piano faded over time because it was right by a huge picture window (and still is) cyn427 - I'm having a hard time visualizing what you mean. The corner to the left as you walk in? Seems like the piano would stick out in front of the door but maybe I'll have to try it. It's only 5' long (it's a baby baby!)...See MorePulling the Living Room Together, Ideas please...
Comments (20)Update: We removed the round table/chairs. It helps much with making the room entry friendly instead of a "gated" feeling. The pianist in the family loves the piano where it is, and it makes us less anxious that it might be in the wrong place with the table removed. Here's some photos now of the edit. I would like any suggestions of what goes on that small wall between the slider and window now. We were thinking a small console type table as a landing spot, but thought of one cozy chair too, I just don't know. Maybe just a large art piece on the wall and leave the floor area open? Thanks so much Susan and Lindsey for checking back and your suggestions! Lindsey, I think you're right about "browning" up the stair skirt and carpet so it kind of disappears, and I did paint the interior walls of it off white because the previous owner had a darker color on the walls and it felt cave like. I'm thinking of finding a berber that comes in different colors and going with a lighter one for the area rug (with binding) and the same rug but darker for the stairs. (yeah! your suggestion!)...See MorePlease help us pull together living room
Comments (22)What a stunning old house with fantabuous detailing! I thought you must be haunted by a spirit, and the reason the long floor was in the living room was so you could catch it! If not, please remove that mirror. In its place, please put a bar cart, and mover the side table to the other side of the chair. Find a coffee table for in front of the sofa. I would not spend a lot for it. I wouldn't spend a lot for the bar table either. After all, this is a rental, you don't know how long you will be here, where you will end up next and what will suit your next place. Scour garage sales, charity stores, etc. What I would do is find some throw pillows or throw pillow covers (or make them yourself) that marry the lighter color of your sofa and the darker color of your chair. I like the look of a fireplace screen too, but I wouldn't invest the money in it for a rental, either. If you can pick one up for a song second hand, then go for it, otherwise, forget it. Then if you want, you can spray-paint it with heat resistant spray paint....See MoreWish to update and pull together living/great room
Comments (21)To be honest where you are and where you want to go are too far apart to make use of most of your furnishings...in concept cozy and zen are sort of opposites...zen is crisp and minimal and every element needs to be perfect...and functional....the most successful path would be to select new zen furniture and arrange it in a more cozy fashion...also scale really matters as your room needs to offer more open and unfurnished space...so your zen furnishings need to be on the small side to allow the room to feel almost empty while still accommodating the number of people who usually use this room and also guests if you entertain in this space...this is a worthy goal as a successful zen room is a joy to inhabit... a restful uncomplicated zone to escape all the normal pressures in life......See Moresteffsophie
