Update ideas? Tiered Tray Ceilings

Buying a home with tiered tray ceilings and looking for ideas to update and freshen. Paint a color or stain the wood trim? Or paint all white?

Maybe sesrch tiered tray ceilings on Pinterest. I just checked and there are lots of combinations. You may also want a different look to best complement the room and your decor.

Update: After the advice on this thread, We went with the single tier. The island back was built out a little more to give us more room behind the sink. Everything turned out great. The Granite is Lennon which has whites, browns, greys, and some copper/bronze. Also, there have been a few posts lately about granite costs/overages and trying to reduce budget by going with limited slabs. If you want a nice uniform look, I would suggest picking out multiple slabs so you can get a nice match/book match. See below how my granite vendor accomplished this. Other experts on here can go into other details. I love the way everything turned out. Can't notice the seam in the middle of our island unless you broke out a magnifying glass. There is a seam right in the middle but you cant see it.

I'm just going to echo what rainyseason wrote above. There are really well-done trays that look fabulous both in the room and in the context of the whole house, and then there a whole lot of shockingly bad, really tragic examples out there too. My gut reaction is that most of the trays in tract builds look pretty bad. That's obviously just my opinion and you know what they say about those. :) However they are over-done right now, so again IMO the poorly done ones are going to really "date" a home in a few years (if they don't already). This is one of those design details that leaves a strong presence in a house. If you really want to do a tray, my only advise is to make sure you're working with someone who really knows what they are doing, lest you end up with that burgundy monstrosity upthread. :)

Partim, I have actually posted pictures of that corner. They were posted 4 days ago, if you look back at my history you will see 3 or 4 of them. One from the kitchen view, that corner to the family room. One of the corner from inside the room, from in front the built-in and a couple from the leather chair and ottoman on that side. There is a step down into the room from behind the recliner which you can not see well in photos. Have not decided on the final layout. I did square up the recliners, one on either side, removed one of the chairs in the room and moved the sofa down toward the tv as an experiment. Not sure I love the setup by the fireplace as it shows cords for the lamp :( the lamp on the there end table can be plugged into the floor, so that is not an issue there.

@njseventyfour I meant put the two adjacent in the corner - it looks like your chimney is to the right of that first window, correct? Couldn't you put the second window to the left of the remaining window? Might make for a nice spot to sit.

And maybe simplify the rectangular one and use the extra space to add some recessed lighting

Waht is YOUR style ? IMO all that wood work and ceilings are like mcmansion houses too over the top and not ideal and what looks like gray LVP on the floors you have your work cut out for you . The octogon for sure fill it in and be done all the rest of th echaep looking trima dnceilings are not IMO worth keeping. But is is nice to know what you think. I need the info about your style so post tht info here ina comment thenwe can help .
