Is it much less blotchy where the side the sun is hitting it or is that my imagination?

Kind of, we also have used the fireplace to warm it up.
In the end, we are going to throw the towel on this material and do something different.

I like the brick, too. It has some gray-ish tones to go with the carpet. The new tile looks like a warm cream/tan

can you mortar wash the brick? I think it would give you the look you're after

I would NOT use a large format tile. the fireplace is too squat for that size.

I like a zellige tile

if you want a stone look don't go any larger than these

you could paint.

Or, do a million other ideas

I also liked the brick but now you're onto something else. You can get a white tile that you like in a white to coordinates with what seems to be a white tile on the hearth. Then a new modern fireplace screen and I would paint the interior of the cubby hole black.

Hi, Thanks for the great ideas! We decided on this 5x5 tile with the decorative trim around the firebox and where the basket is. The limestone is being taken out. It is being installed this week. I have an installation question. The “columns” by the cutouts are 12in. The tile is 5x5. Should the cut tile be the center tile or the 2 end pieces? Thank you!

Your tile pro will likely have a reccomendation for the best layout to reduce tile slivers - since the tile should be consistent from top to bottom I can’t imagine they would trim the center tile - in any case make sure you have talked thru it with them so there are no surprises

Thanks all! We FINALLY have our fireplace done. Thanks for everyone’s input. The pics may not do it justice, but the tile is a subtle hue of blue and grey, it almost looks like water and we did a decorative tile around the boxes.

What white paint did you use for your cabinets/trim? What color paint for walls? Are the walls a light griege?

I would consider painting the other cubby opening black… or replace it with a material like the mantle… for more continuity

Yes, we use and it is wood burning.

The the cubby is designed to hold wood..originally…and unlined…still good/ convenient for that…but many times perfectly chosen same size logs are installed there for decor purposes…it really doesn’t offer handy storage space..and not well suited for décor displays …the wood would be more authentic
