Idea to bring this yard and exterior up to date
Comments (13)I like the idea to lighten just the dark brick so they blend better. Otherwise, the plan above are excellent. I would get a landscape architect out to look at it and make you up a plan with plants for your area. I would avoid putting a path through the middle of your yard, but that might be personal preference. Could be nice if people walk through the yard often....See MoreHelp with exterior paint colors to bring into 2020
Comments (17)Congratulations your house is fine :) The best part of the front elevations IMHO is the long gracious approach view from a distance you shared, where there are mature trees, layering, shadow, hide-and-reveal peeks at the house from beyond. That’s a major priceless amenity, not easy to fix unless you have the room and 15+ years to wait for trees to mature. Beyond that IMHO it doesn’t really matter if the (warm) paint hue is gray-green or green-gray or greige with darker shutters, in the big picture and if it already is in good condition I would not change it for the sake of changing things. Your house is layered nicely including the front porch casting a darker shadow for more depth. Yes the porch columns and railings should stay “white“ or whatever the whitish light trim color is for them to read against the rest. Everything else is nitpicking in the big picture. The nitpicking - A personal pet peeve is the “wallpaper” brick veneer facing detail on the second story front stopping at the corner and not continuous around the corner. I would either paint the upper floor brick veneer on the front to match the siding to minimize that contrasting corner. Or peel off the brick veneer wallpaper from the upper floor and continue the siding for a “whole” or solid appearance. Since it isn’t “my” house and the market loves brick even if only a facing, and it doesn’t bother you just leave it, not worth it. I would not try to add more brick around the corner. The low brick corners on the garage & on the front porch corner are disguised with tall landscaping & not that obvious. Since your lot seems deep and generous I would have tried for the garage to be a 90 degree “ell” shape so the garage doors were on the side of the “ell”, & have a parking courtyard for this type of house. At this point the way the front garage doors are painted a darker color is fine....See MoreWould love ideas on how to jazz up this very dated stone exterior?
Comments (18)Don't paint the stone, you are living in a piece of folk art. Agree to pick a tan or yellowish, or grey for the wood and then see if you like the stone, I think you will. The door will never be as fun as this stone. Save the money for other projects that are needed....See MoreCan I get advice on a paint scheme -- the current paint looks dated.
Comments (12)I want to lighten up the facia and siding -- possibly the gable area another shade of the same color. Was thinking about replacing the shutters with custom made, stained cedar shutters & IF i left that rail in front of the door, possibly staining the cedar to match the shutters. Also considered the removal of the railing. It really is there only for looks. The tree near the window is not really as close as it appears in the picture. I have tree people coming out next week to lift the canopy up where practical. Paint is a lot cheaper than replacing with cedar on the garage or siding. They make these kits for garage doors that turn out very nice -- kind of a faux finish - wood-like look. I could make it look cedar too. I do want to pull a color from the stone - but trying to get just a teeny bit cheerful and brighter -- I'm not so creative with colors. Thank you both for responding! Oh -- Probably will remove the bushes and replace. The front yard only gets filtered sun - limitations on bright color and also have to deal with deer munching on plants/shrubs....See Morelittlebug Zone 5 Missouri
