What would you do? We don't like DD's boyfriend!
Comments (44)jterrilynn - " We always feel like we lost our puppy or something" I have two boys and that's how I feel when a girlfriend is gone. My eldest son went out with a girl for two years and everyone really like her. When they broke up his cousins asked him if they could keep her and get rid of him. :) Back to topic- When above son was in high school he was part of a group of kids who were/are good kids - smart, responsible nice kids. They weren't the in-kids or the jocks but they were the kids who accepted the nerds and the new kids - the social group where parents wanted their own kids to be a part of in school. They weren't perfect but the silly things they did never overshadowed their reputation. In first year college he met a new male friend and started hanging out with him. I think there was some thrill to hanging out with this kid. This kid didn't have a good reputation (drugs were the issue) and that's how I approached the problem. Instead of forbidding him from seeing this new "friend" I talked to him about reputations and labels. My son (and his friends) had a good label and this boy did not. I explained how easy it is to go from a "good" label to a "bad" label or reputation and how so very difficult it is to get back that reputation. I explained that even though he may not do anything wrong the bad label is easily transferred. People like to talk about the bad kids but seldom about the good kids because that isn't tantalizing or scintillating gossip. I explained about the purpose of gossip and how stories can get exaggerated and with the advent of texting and tweeting how quickly things can spread. So I asked him what kind of a label did he want for himself and what kind of a reputation did he and his friends want for themselves - for now and for the future. My son chose to get rid of this kid but I think it was hard for him but he had goals and figured out that being involved with this kid could hamper those goals. Selfishly, I also told him that I didn't want this kid and his reputation to hamper my reputation. As my son's mother I could get dragged into the gossip as well. ( what was she thinking allowing DS1 to hang out with that kid, etc) I just explained that he would eventually be moving out of the neighbourhood and I wouldn't be....See MorePls. vote on rug/chandelier for DD's room
Comments (31)I went ahead and moved the highboy and bed position. Bad news is that I don't think the daybed centered under the window idea is going to work as it leaves only around 20" per side which seems a waste of space. So then I will need to scratch my plan to use the panels--unless I can shorten them? I can get a top valance in either pattern--DD likes the sheer dots, though will wait to finalize until other items are finalized. I also had ordered a lime lamp in case it started looking like too much aqua. On the paint front, DD has one lime green accent wall now. I don't think the desk really works with color. If I keep furniture the present color I will need to go with a real light wall color--still sifting through my options here and will wait until my FLOR samples come in on the 13th. I feel a solid rug is best for her as her room starts looking very "busy" easily with all her paranephilia. I mostly want the rug to protect my hardwood floor (only three years old). Already there are 3 ink stains which I've mostly gotten out--but if there are any stains, I'd rather the rug is stained and not the floor. I didn't much care for the desk next to the dresser as I had before so moved it. I do like that oak hutch bookcase for the storage, may keep it awhile or swap it out with the new bookcase at some point. I can definitely say I am glad for the additional storage of the highboy since DD is a pack-rat! Old dresser will go but am keeping there for now since it has all her clothes. So, what do you think in terms of furniture layout? No where else for the bed really if I want to have access to the trundle. I did find another bed couple of daybed options on CL. I'd rather not paint this one since it's part of a set. DS has other bed. Funny I've toyed with painting his black, but can't seem to paint either because it's a "set." Either of these grab anyone? Would paint the wooden parts. Wooden one with slats. May be more comfy? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/fuo/1544828496.html Or this one? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/fuo/1545041069.html Or this one? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/fuo/1544721809.html Or keeping looking?...See MoreInput Needed on DD's Bedroom Makeover
Comments (16)Val, I thought you'd like that bedroom. This friend is very talented in doing childrens room. She has a son too. Actually everything I've seen that she's done is magnificent. She really should blog, but she's quite busy redoing an old home they just purchased. Now let me tell you first, that I'm pretty much the last person that would normally tell you to do this as I happen to be a wood lover. Love the grain, the varying wood tones and just hate the thought of painting good wood. Deep breath. When looking at the furniture you have for your daughter I would think very hard about painting this before buying something else to paint. The chest of drawers would be so darling painted aqua with glass knobs and pulls to replace the current hardware. All you'd have to do was sand it or use a liquid sander to dull the finish, prime and paint. The bed could be painted the same way maybe using glass door knobs as finials on the bed posts. You can find them online if you search discount glass doorknobs for a very reasonable price. The desk would be harder to give the look you are going for since it's a bit MCM in styling so I'd replace that, but maybe look for a pretty dressing table like the one my friend used that could serve as a desk with the mirror down and later as a dressing table. And again, the bookcase you have now, more likely a combination of cabinet quality oak plywood and solid oak, with a little added crown molding along with a decorative base would look great painted too. Annaglypta wallpaper for the back of the shelves would add a cute touch too. Talk to hubby, tell him a wood grain nut that was given the salutation of "ack don't paint that!" by friends who know her well, thinks it's not a bad thing to paint these items. If you were going to keep them for use elsewhere in your home it would be a different story, but since you'll be selling them anyway to someone else that might paint them, why go to the trouble of buying something old from someone else just to paint it and then have to turn around and hopefully make what you spent on the old stuff in selling your stuff. I hope that made sense. I should be in bed....See MoreFamily against a gift I bought my dd!
Comments (20)I have two daughters, maybe what I will do is make one dress like a prostitute and the other dress like a respectable young lady, you know the type eleven going on twelve instead of twenty-seven and in heat, Oh this would be for the betterment of man kind doncha know. Of course the one that gets to dress like the prostitute will need to smoke and cuss, date seven guy in one week at the age of eleven, and drop out of school because she is to obsessed with boys to learn at the age of thirteen and pregnant. Of course the one who dresses respectable will need the most effort, having more self respect she will strive for a better education, not being distracted with boys, she will learn things her mother and I will not know, which will be threatening to our egos, she will earn more because she will think more of her shelf, the man she will marry will be a better man to her and their children. We do also have a son and for him I think I will tell him if he want some cheap non emotional sex with a girl, look for the one with the short skirt no bra, bare midriff showing and tattoos and a tongue piercing, but if he wants to have a fulfilling meaningful life with a lady not a pig, look for the one dressed modestly and yes this is Âmy choice I say if youÂre having second thoughts, that should tell you something right there. Of course the world need more porn stars and burger flipper. I am not there to be my childrenÂs friend, I am not their buddy I am dad, period What we say goes, temper that with love and physical affection, and yes hugs.
