First Day of Spring?

Yesterday was the first day of spring, but it surely didn't feel like it here. Tomorrow is supposed to be springlike, and I am looking forward to that. The storms forcast for Friday night? Not so much but spring is surely on the way. Can blooms be far behind? come on, Nancy. show us some more greenhouse beauties to whet our appetites in the non-springlike spring.

We will have some spring weather tomorrow. You are a day ahead of us. But looking long term, after a warm up the rest of the week, it may be winterish again next week.

The daffodils really took a hit with all the frigid nights. Oddly enough my tulips are starting to bloom; I thought they wouldn't. My Grape Hyacinths act like nothing happened and look great.

I'm surprised your daffs were hurt. That Siberian cold spell we all had to partake in earlier made my pansies freeze and, I thought die. Almost all of them are back to blooming now and the shot of color is heartening. I am glad the tulips are up for you. they are always so pretty. We are supposed to be freeze free for the rest of March but usually have a shorter very cold spell sometime in the early part of April. Today I will spend some time in ht egarden and I am looking forward to it. I bought a few perennial plants last fall and the three that I potted all survived and are putting up their happy growth. I count it a win that the cold didn't kill them.

I'm so excited for you. Our first day of spring is just crazy. Last week we broke all time temperature records for this month by 10 degrees or more when we were in the mid 70s. Today my car thermometer read 87! This is just incredible. More often than not, we have snow routinely this time of year. Our Forsythia is blooming at least a month ahead of schedule. We're certainly enjoying it for now. I just hope the fruit trees and other vital agricultural products aren't ruined if we return to our typical temps. Our normal last frost date is June 1. Those temperature differences between years continue forever. I remember March 3 in 1959 when I could sit in a horticultural park looking at bright green grass, now there is snow. Where I live now we have 8 inches of fresh snow, just yesterday made a 5 ft snowman with my grandson, but Saturday the 40s will start with 51 dgrs in 10 days. The sun is moving higher and there is no step back into continuous cold for a few months, until next winter. In my thinking, spring starts just after big box stores show gardening supplies. That was a week ago at Home Depot here. Today is the day I will buy gardening supplies. HD has $5 off when I buy more than $50. I also have a $4 coupon for Preen. We feel sorry for the wild turkeys. A group of 5 came out of the woods and started hurrying toward our feeders then started flying. They rarely fly so this was a treat for us. We wonder how their legs and feet keep from freezing. I did have a crocus blooming next to the house but it's under snow now. I had forgotten we had a heat wave last year about this time. A friend said she planted her peas a year ago. Maybe next week it will be spring.

Moni, Well, technically it isn't spring until a little after noon today. I don't suppose the snow will mysteriously disappear at 12:32 p.m. when 'Spring' officially arrives? It sure does look pretty though! Only rain and mud here so far, but our temperature is hanging right at 33 so conditions should go downhill pretty fast. At least this storm should only last a couple of days and then we can get on with spring. Dawn

I was surprised most of my daffs made it through. it was 19 degrees one night. I know one year it was not that cold and took them out. But we had a bit of a breeze so that probably helped. Windy out today, but warm and sunny! I will get out and do a bit in the yard today. I can't tell if my peony buds survived. I covered the budded ones, but the wind kept blowing their cover off. Look fine right now, but I have thought that before. Happy Spring!

One day its cold next we are in the 60s/70's. Daffs are blooming, tulips have the flower buds starting to show, crocus still blooming and the daylilies are coming up faster now. Its been raining all day and iexpected into tomorrow. I've got lots of perennial plants coming in the coming weeks. I like to have lots of mixes in the gardens and then I still have my veggie garden plants to look for. I do have large neck garlic growing that I planted last fall and they are doing great so far. Many trees in the area are in full bloom already.
