Looking for natural stone now and seeing painted and dyed slabs!

Paul F.
last year

I see quartzite crystal and granite slabs that have been dipped and dyed and Onyx painted to get more intense and/or unnatural colors. I don't really see any of the stone yards disclosing that the stone has been altered. How UV resistant is the dye? What if the stone is scratched? Can the color be replicated? I asked one guy if a slab was dyed and "He smiled and asked how I knew." He had no intention of telling me. I said because this color looked unnatural.

Is this normal these days? It sure wasn't a decade ago. Even HomeGoods sells purple 'amethyst' crystal knick knacks that are just white crystals that have been dyed purple. Does it wash off?
