7'X7' Breakfast Nook: 3' Square Table placed Diagonally??
Comments (7)"A built in bench won't work due to price and the window in the nook that is only 30" off the floor." I have a 5x4 breakfast nook now where I have an ikea upper cabinet (inexpensive) on the floor for the bench. It is 12" wide and has storage. ikea used to have this on display with a diy cushion that was just some fabric wrapped around batting. It is okay for my kids, but we eventually had a 16" vinyl cushion made for it. The cushion cost 3x the price of the ikea cabinet. It is just plywood topped with foam and wrapped with vinyl. It is stapled. If I had to do it again, I would do it myself. My table is also from ikea and its mounted on one side to the wall and has one leg for extra support. The leg is centered on the table and allows you to easily slide into the bench. It is not an ideal situation, but it was the best we could do with our existing space. I don't think the 3x3 table is ideal. If you like the stainless tabletop, look for something similiar in a longer and narrower size, 30 inch max. How about using a round table? Or a bar height table with stools? You might want to look at some of the "Not So Big House" books by Sarah Susanka for some ideas. I don't care for her style, but her design concepts can be applied to any style. I believe she recommends that windows be 30" from the floor for window seats, and you already have that working for you! Comments (28)I have the seat cushions from a couch that my mom got rid of a few years ago (yes, we've been at this remodel that long...) that I've been saving for a bench seat. We picked up some auto upholstery material at a garage sale to cover them with. It looks kind of like a plush microfiber fabric. When I think of how long the seats in a car last with relatively little care, it seems like this should be a durable solution. I've also made a quick non-sewing cover of a smaller cushion where I simply wrapped the foam like a birthday present and pinned everything together with large safety pins on the underside. The pins don't show from the top or sides. It looks upholstered, but the cover can be removed for cleaning. This might not hold up to high usage, though....See MorePlease vote on breakfast nook layout (no lego model yet)
Comments (18)Since budget is a big consideration, I think it's great that you can solve some of the issues by trimming. Rather than adding to your budget in the bookshelf corner, I agree that keeping it to the wall mounted shelves and the Boos cart is an excellent idea. Much easier on the budget, and useful for all the reasons you mentioned. You can put some big, nice looking items on the shelves so that it doesn't become visual clutter, and is still useful storage. On a lower shelf like that, a single large roaster can be more visually appealing than a bunch of bowls, for example. You can't plan for everything and things change. For instance, if your rolling needs outgrow your little lowered rolling station, you can, at some point, switch out the cart for a marble topped one at rolling height, and put butcher block on your built-in marble to raise it to counter height. Since you have the lip, you probably wouldn't even need to secure it. Oh! You could actually do that now, get a butcher block to fit there. It would extend your counter space, be convenient to the sink, and protect the marble when you're not using it for pastry. I'm still concerned about that whole end with the fridge but it might just be something you'll have to live with, since you can't move it to the bookshelf area. I really suggest you do a mockup using cardboard boxes and tape to make sure it's going to work for you. It would be a shame to do this whole remodel and then be unhappy. Much better to slow down a little and be sure now. You might find that the corner beside the fridge is just fine and the layout works really well for you! But if it doesn't, better to know now. Or it might be that you can use some of the money you saved on the window seat to put a narrower, built-in fridge in the bookshelf corner. Whatever you can do to make it comfortable, and make it work. BTW, I have a cupboard that opens into a doorway in my currently-being-installed kitchen, and I just love it! Another BTW, if the issues with your hands are soft tissue, I highly recommend Feldenkreis therapy....See MoreBreakfast Nook w/ low windows
Comments (1)why dont you use only the wall with the art work for a bench without L shape . Work with what you have. this is pretty max'ed out w the bookcase but the straight bench allows chairs on short ends of table ...note they have super big windows and they managed without the L shape...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
