Pardon my ignorance
Comments (10)Altho I'm not familiar with the product you mention it sounds as if it's a protein supplement feed that has salt included which ensures the cattle will not overfeed on it while on range and not supervised. So it's really not something you want on your lawn. I'd be very cautious of anything those "good ol' boys" at the feed store tell you as they may see you as a greenhorn and be having some fun at your expense. It's been known to happen. I was a greenhorn when I first started raising cattle here and it was a steep learning curve. Takes a few wins at competition before they understand you're no longer in the greenhorn class and they stop the nonsense. In your case I'd nicely explain that if they cannot provide you with the products you need for your garden you'll have to drive to the other feed store for them. Big smile while you say that! They need your business so will likely comply. You can look up feeds by googling and generally see what they are for. They should carry 100% cottonseed or soya meal, or other seed meals that are used in your area. I can't buy cottonseed meal here as the shipping from where it's grown would be too expensive but many other seed meals are available. You can also compare the available protein of each meal with the price and find the best buy for fertilizing that way. I'm not sure if protein exactly equals nitrogen but there is a relationship which I'm sure one of our experts can tell us. I think it will give you a rough idea of the fertilizer value anyhow. Here's a table from the link below which shows the relative values: Here is a link that might be useful: protein comparisons...See MoreMonarda 'Purple Rooster' and 'Pardon My Purple'
Comments (6)So far, I have tried many of the dwarf varieties of Monarda and they either get mildew or die off or both. I may try one or both of these new ones you mention, particularly 'Purple Rooster'. My latest to die was Grand Parade. 'Jacob Cline', 'Gardenview Scarlet', and 'Bluestocking' all grow just fine for me....See MoreKilling weeds in my Scotch/Irish moss
Comments (1)I have Preene right now but I read that will the Moss...although my wife uses it on our garden beds and the other plants were all just fine. In anycase is there a specific type of roundup that I want to be using? This post was edited by qwiksilvertrav on Thu, Jul 24, 14 at 20:49...See MoreBuilding my Irish Shed
Comments (33)Wow, I didn't expect this thread to still be alive. We no longer own the acreage or the lovely little shed, but I still see it when I drive by, and it looks to be holding up well. Chuck, the beams were just rough milled pine 6x6 from a local mill, untreated except for stain application after. The skids that the floor of the shed were built on were the only treated wood used as they were contacting the ground. The insulation quality in this particular shed is slim to none, as the walls are just 6" thick firewood chunks and mortar. Some of the wood shrank a bit as it should have been stacked once chopped to size and let dry for a bout a year. So this shed definitely is not insulated. A lot of cordwood builds use longer lengths of firewood and only apply mortar on the inside and outside edge of the walls like chinking, they infill the middle with sawdust. These style of builds have great insulating properties. Thanks for the questions. I had a lot of fun building the shed and am happy to see so much interest in it. freezengril, thanks for the awesome link!...See MoreCA Kate z9
