dual shower heads in master/primary bathroom

i want to add a second shower head in my master bathroom. originally, i wanted 2 shower heads and a rain shower, BUT my shower stall isn't large enough to accommodate all those shower heads. i've ended up with two shower heads, but now need to decide on the actual shower heads. at first, i wanted 1 fixed and 1 with dual heads/one being hand held....but now my boyfriend is saying to do two dual shower heads with both of them having the hand held. any thoughts on that? it just seems like overkill? so in other words, possibly two (2) of these shower heads (attached).

any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you completely remodeling the bathroom, or just adding to the existing one? When you have more than one shower head you need a diverter to switch from one to the other or you need two separate valves. If the rough plumbing (the valve mechanism behind the wall) doesn't have a diverter, you'll need to re-do the shower entirely to add the appropriate plumbing.

We just redid our master bath and we put in a rain shower head on a 14" arm and we put in a hand shower. The valve is a plain pressure balance valve with a diverter.

it sounds like overkill. Unless you have a very large space... enough to step out of the spray.

one head with the handheld attachment.

personally not a fan of rainhead... splashes off your head onto the floor if you have an open wet room or door is not to ceiling.

I am in process of designing a shower with the same dimensions and questions. Same drain plan. Preliminary decision is to go with Kohler's hydrorail shower system which is exposed, includes the handheld diverter and supports a rain shower head on the 18" extension. That puts someone showering between 18-24" from the shower head wall. It leaves considerable space in back for a bench or a chair. The advantage to me is simplicity -- that system supports a single pressure balance valve and has an integral diverter. Alternately, to do a ceiling mounted rain head plus a hand held, a thermostatic valve is needed and the price escalates. For a master, I'd likely go with thermostatic. We have one in our master with a separate hand shower and it's excellent. But for this powder room bath expansion I think a single pressure balance (on/off) shower is sufficient. It's really a question of how the shower will be designed/used. I don't have experience with the hydrorail so I did do a post asking if anyone had used it.

i truly dont get the dual shower heads, someone explain advantages please. In our 28 years of marriage, only time we were in shower together is when we got frisky ;-)) If we both needed to take a shower, i being the man would just go to our other bath, take my shower and go....

I screwed up - it's a master bedroom and bath in the basement with walk out. You are 100% correct with the confusion. What I've decided to do is to have this be more of a "guest master bedroom" or future inlaw place. Every home is initially designed for the current occupant but also with future occupants in mind. Therefore what I'll do is focus on the upstairs primary bedroom and then if I do decide to stay, I'll give this to my soon to be teen-age daughter and I'll build my primary bedroom in the basement. When someone comes to look at the home to buy, they can look at the downstairs as a large "room" which could be a bedroom (staged as such) and an awesome bathroom ideally suited for a bedroom or just an awesome entertainment room.

Jets aren't that popular these days due to water conservation rules in many parts of the country. I like to install 2 completely separate fixtures in a shower, each with its own volume control and thermostatic valve. I like one to be a standard wall mounted shower head (Speakman makes the old hotel style Icon shower heads) and the other a handheld on an adjustable shower/grab bar (I like Jaclo). Next to the handheld unit use a teak bench or built-in bench. I used Brizo for the plumbing fixtures. No issues with hot water and our tankless heaters, one at each end of the house. Here is the setup in my guest bathroom. Teak bench is on the left, so if needed, you can sit down and adjust the handheld lower. Handheld shower is also great for rinsing and cleaning the shower.

Ditch the fixed showerhead and just do a handheld on a slide bar. The setup you show locks you into a fixed height for both showerheads, which seems rather redundant. Why would you not want adjustability?

my shower insert has been completed removed. the plumber will be here tomorrow to rough in the valves. i have 2 valves...one for the new shower and the other one to replace the old valve. so the plan is to be able to use/control the shower heads separately.

Simple is the best for this shower size personally think:

Wall mount fixed shower head plus handheld shower head fixed by ALL-IN-ONE wall supply elbow.

Or Ceiling mount rain shower head (3 inch shower arm plz) plus wall mount fixed shower head.

Personally think for 3ft x 5ft shower, the best way for handheld showerhead installation is fixed by an ALL-IN-ONE wall supply elbow, to save space.

The wall mount fixed showerhead and hand shower will be installed on different wall.

This layout supplies more space for shower gel and shampoo.

I have a two head retrofit system with a shower rain can plus a slide bar hand held in the kid bath and i like it. you can use each separately or together.
