Electrical Wiring Lighting Design Dilemma

No attic, tongue and groove ceiling - Need a light solution!

Remodeling and need some help! We are trying to get pendant lights above the island, but the only overhead light in the kitchen is offset. We initially thought we could just jog the existing light over, but turns out we'll need 2-3 pendants (island is roughly 4' x 6 3/4'). We'd rather not cut into the ceiling, but are having a hard time conceptualizing a solution. Track lighting may be an option, but the pendants I've seen online all seem too small. We are looking for larger task lights (cone or globe maybe). There is wire just hanging above from the beam above the island (that's how we found- just chillin' inside a brick column that housed double ovens). We thought we may be able to fashion something coming out of the drywall above (maybe on a steel arm), but again... we want it to look nice/intentional. We are working with an electrician and need to figure this out within the next week or two. Anyone else deal with this or just have an eye for design and want to help? Have pictures of your own solutions? Crafty electrical solutions? Recommendations?

You (or your electrician) should be able to fish in a wire from this open portion of the ceiling

over to the wood portion. see blue lines (and yes, there will be a small space behind that wood)

Or, why can't he piggyback off the light/wiring that's already there w/the pendant?

remove that light, fish a line over to the spot where you want your island lights.

We have a vaulted ceiling with the same small spacing above it. my husband did just that for the chandelier

That's prob how they did all the lighting in this kitchen

as for pendant size/number of lights, you'll need to figure the finish size of the island and how big of pendant you are going to use

What is the current lighting plan outside of the pendants? are you using the chandelier wiring to get light in the room. Im thinking, the wire could be fished over but wondering what other lighting you will have. Track is a good solution, you can hang a lot of pendants off track with the proper adapter. You could also use rail lighting, that would allow you to run several lights around the whole space.

Ditto on the shellac primer. You will probably have to re-sand all those areas with the knots? remove the other paint/primer. I have this chore to look forward to as well in my bedroom. The white window casings and the baseboards all have yellow spots where the knots bled through. No one told me I should have used primer with shellac. I keep putting it off because it seems like such a big job. ugh. Luckily when it came time to paint the cream colored beadboard walls in the kitchen I was wiser. So far so good - no bleed through yet after three years.

"We would like to cover the cedar with drywall. Can we just secure the drywall by screwing directly through the cedar into the joists? Is 1/2" drywall ok?" I'm not sure why no one responded to your post, but I could not comment on the above without further knowledge of snowloads etc. on what sounds like minimal rafters. If loads were not an issue, DW could be installed on sleepers intermediate to the rafters as a way to minimise nail pops from wood movement. Response to your second question is biased. I'm against any lighting or plumbing that involves violating the building envelope/ conditioned space.

I am reading this thread and working on a porch ceiling too. I like this color and would love to know what is shown in the photo and what stain she decided to go with!! Any answers? The wood is pine and I’m leaning towards Golden Oak or possibly Mountain Ash by SW for a hint of gray. Let me know if anyone has suggestions!! Appreciate the help!

I enjoyed reading all the commentary. I learned alot especially about the use of varnish. It is an old school finish that uses resins to protect the wood with the added benefit of a leaving the wood with a lovely patina as well as adding a drama to the hue. A comment up the chain aptly likened it to the look of wood on his boat. In addition to varnishes I love using gel stains when i want to add a stain. The viscosity or gel quality allows longer curing period and therefore enough application time to greater control than regular stain products. I have also had excellent effects with gel stain on painted wood. If you work with it the look mimics wood quite convincingly.

A rail or cable system might be your best bet. Tech Lighting (and others) has a lot of customizable options for low voltage lighting that connects to a rail or cable system.
