My Barbados Cherry tree is fruiting like a madman so I have seeds galore. I am willing to trade for ANY fruit seeds that grow in my area (Zone 10B South Florida). mall, bright red, berry-sized fruit with a vitamin C content up to 65 times that of an orange. A single fruit contains the minimum daily recommended vitamin C requirements. Fruit resembles the common cherry, with a very tasty sweet flavor having a slight bite of acid. Description: A bushy shrub up to 20ft. Acerola's often form small multi-trunked trees. Trees without adequate pollination can set seedless fruit. Flowers usually appear after periods of rainfall or irrigation. Flowering may occur any time during the year (depending on local rainfall and climate patterns), and can last year-round. After flower set, fruit soon follows and will ripen in just 3-4 weeks. Fruits lose their flavor and nutritional content very rapidly upon harvest. Ripe acerola's should be picked and eaten within a few hours to preserve taste. As a result, the tree is not cultivated for commercial production of fresh fruits. There is some confusion regarding the botanical name, with the name M. glabra often used for the acerola. There is a closely related species, the true M. glabra, having smaller fruits and larger leaves. The common acerola, with its larger fruits is generally classified as M. punicifolia.

No problem with overproduction here - I'm in 9b, and they are marginal here. So it will remain as a small potted specimen. Even if it sets heavily, it is just a small bush=) Thanks for the account of your experience Tomas. This is a new plant, so that could be the case. I got it last summer. It produced flowers last fall, with no fruit, and I thought it was probably because repotting had triggered an out of season bloom. But had hoped that this spring's flowering would set fruits. I'll keep watching it and see what happens. Even if there isn't fruit, the flowers are delicate and smell wonderful.

Hello new_in_texas: Thanks for the pictures, mine look exactly like yours except for two or three that are really taking off. The Red Bird of Paradise is one of the Pride of Barbados colors, that's the most common to acquire. The pink and yellow seem to be more expensive even just for the SEED. As far as your answer on 2 ft per year I'm looking at a long time before they mature then I suppose. I was planning on taking them out of the pots and planting them next Spring. Runjbells: Thanks for your response on the Cherry Barbados. It sounds like the same growth rate on the Pride of Barbados. As far as the winter, from what I understand they should resurrect come spring. I am growing my seedlings in the house until next spring so they get a good root base then I'll let them try to brave the winter next year. Did you just plant the seed in the ground? I tried putting a few seedlings outside but when two burned up from the heat I brought the survivor back in. It still hasn't fully recovered, I may lose it. Still on the learning curve on these and trying different things.
