Anyone still grow Blossomtime?
Comments (10)Sammy, My reason for growing it in a pot is this: When I moved from CA to VA, I dug up most of my roses from the ground and moved them, having to really chop off the roots and then the canes. When I realized in VA that a move might be in the future, I wanted to make my roses more mobile and felt putting them in pots would be less traumatic since I could move them pot and all. At that point all my new roses or propagated roses were planted in pots. When winter came in VA, I had several piles of wood chips from having trees cut down so I leveled off the tops of the piles and dug holes in the chips( real easy) and sunk the pots into them. The roses did very well. I had thought they would be in this situation for a year or 2 but it has ended up to about four-TOO LONG. The roses have been happy and thrived despite no spray and no fertilizer and lots of neglect the last few years. What happened was they sent roots out of the pots and into the wood chip pile. This summer, fall, I have moved about 60 or so roses, pots and all to NY. They have all done well except for Buff Beauty (never too vigorous for me) and many were pumping out blooms in November despite no spray nor fertilizer but just watering. I did have to chop the roots back to release the pots. I have not brought my BT up yet. It had large perfectly formed blooms on the bush in November. The plant is about 6 feet tall and the pot is tilted so it leans west. Healthy as can be. I would use BT as a large free standing shrub, possibly in the lawn as a focal point. I would not put them in pots but directly in the ground. They get the size of a large forsythia bush or a small lilac. The canes seem too stiff for a climber and it makes a lovely plant so I would prune it minimally. This is how it did for me in Richmond VA- New York may tell another tale. You will love BT, one of the best in my opinion. Hope this helps, Jim...See MoreSequoia sempervirens in central NJ - Any chance? PT. 2
Comments (31)I hate to be a bumper but...any news famartin? All of mine recovered completely; by late summer you have had no idea anything had happened to them. Am increasingly concerned about this winter as the "polar vortices" seem never to have retreated this year. OTOH, NOAA CPC is not calling for a colder than normal winter. So maybe there's a ray of hope. The northern tier of states getting snow covered so early does not bode well though...and apparently the Great Lakes never really warmed up to normal temp. levels this summer....See MoreAny chance an 'Emperor' at H.D. could be true?
Comments (8)There is really NO way to tell if either is a true emporer IMHO...and most think the E and e1 or the same...someone else may have a better handle on differnces IF ANY... 250$ is not cheap for a four foot tree $125.00 is a good price for 5-6 ft tree. You might want to check with Della at http://nurserygirl1.tripod.com/index.html ...before you purchase she sells only larger trees for about 70$ + shipping which to your area via dhl is about 10-12$ . She is getting in about 60 new trees tomarrow and deals with a big well established grower whose stuff is both top drawer and true to name!!..I have no idea whether E or E1 is on her list. I bought one from her last year 4-5 ft and it is doing great ...a nice fully branched larger tree. Unless the gurantee is better at the nursery or the tree is nicer I don't see how you could go wrong with HD as much as i'd like to see the local nursery supported ...that is just to big of price differnce...especially ifthe hd one is a nicer tree...now if that$250 includes delivery and planting i might think differntly ;>). Comments (2)Sara, normally I have always found the fledglings to start following the parents to the feeder in 7-10 days after fledgling. It is possible you have a new pair of Bluebirds and your other ones won't come back now. A nesting pair of Blues won't let another pair in their territory. However it could be the same pair. Do you have an actual feeder on your table or do you just put the worms in a an open dish? If it is a feeder I would say you probably have the same pair and maybe you will be seeing the fledglings soon too. Normally Bluebirds need to be trained to come to a feeder so a new pair wouldn't just show up and know what the feeder was but they could find an open dish easy enough if they can perch nearby to see the movement of the worms. Just keep an eye out for those fledglings. Donna...See Morehaku84_zone9
