New AARS winners announced for 2011
Comments (9)Not until next year's bareroots come out in your area. In Southern California, that's December. So, they truly are 2011 roses. (It's not like cars, where the model year is almost over when the calendar year starts). And funny thing, socks12345, I had just the opposite reaction-- The one of these two I am attracted to is Dick Clark, not the yellow floribunda. I have lots of yellow florries -- I just bought Monkey Business and Shockwave and am wondering how different Walking on Sunshine could be. But a Double Delight that doesn't get disease (it's a disease magnet here) -- that would be double delightful. Kathy...See MoreStatton Furniture Closing it's doors...
Comments (7)This is incredibly sad. Thirty years ago I bought 2 of their mirrors as this was all I could afford. My dear SIL has a Statton china cabinet and a Statton dining room table and chairs that are more than 40 years old. All of these pieces are truly heirlooms of marvelous quality that look better today than when they were new. This makes me feel so old because a voice in my brain is saying the world is changing---not for the better---and it sounds like my grandmother talking to me about how supermarket chickens didn't taste as good as the ones she raised. I once dismissed this because I thought she just couldn't accept the reality that everything changes. Now I wish she was still around to talk with about her experiences with the changing world....See MoreBOSCH closing its laundry division
Comments (9)Here's another interesting option for a ventless dryer I haven't seen discussed here. It's a 24"w, fairly small capacity dryer (only 17 1/2" depth, it's rated at 9 lbs., or just less than the capacity of the smallest 24"w front-load washers) that runs on 120V/15A power, and is quite inexpensive. I don't think it's a condensation dryer; rather, it simply filters the lint from the air and exhausts moist air into the room. I have an old General Electric dryer that works like this, and I must say it does a great job, and it doesn't get all that hot or humid nearby by dint of its small size and low power. The effect can actually be quite nice in the cold, dry winters we get around here. Unlike mine (which is about 40 year old), this one has auto shutoff as well as a you-guess-the-time option, and a window in the door that makes it easy to see when it's done, as well as if it's overloaded. There's no condensation filter to clean, no water tray to empty, no hose to drain. All you really need to do is clean out the lint filter between loads. I wouldn't put it where humidity or heat would be a major problem, but I'm baffled as to why these aren't more popular than they are. The only issue I've had with them is that some lint escapes the filter and the area in front of the dryer needs vacuuming more often than usual. This type of dryer is best paired with a small front-load washer with a high spin speed for maximum water extraction, perhaps one of the 2000rpm Askos but anything 1200rpm or higher should work adequately. Comments (10)I'm in the minority, I guess. (No surprise there.) I used to loathe Gourmet for being so high-brow, as if it were written for millionaires. I loved Bon Appetit because it seemed to be for those of us who wanted to cook real food with ingredients (as opposed to "Dump and heat"), but didn't assume everyone had truffles, foie gras and duck in our fridge as a matter of course. Then Barbara Fairchild took over BA and it became less about food and more about stroking her ego. Meanwhile, Ruth Reichl took over at Gourmet and it became more "real." After subscribing to BA for over 20 years, I cancelled my subscription and started getting Gourmet. In the last two years, however, they have both lacked substance. I don't like when the articles read like ads. I'll miss it. And I'm glad they are keeping the recipes on Epicurious....See Morekidhorn2
