Dining room storage ideas
Comments (8)Igloochic, I love your dining room! Is that venetian plaster on the walls? Have you considered having a custom built piece that would run the entire wall and go all the way to the ceiling. You could do some open shelves that were glass and lighted and then closed storage underneath? I know you probably don't want to part with your lovely china cabinet which looks like a 1st cousin to my DR set, which was my Grandparent's set, but you could always put it in a bedroom or LR and use it more as a curio cabinet. I do love that my set belonged to my grandparents but I also wish it had way more storage! My mom had a triple china hutch and it held so much more stuff! BTW I LOVE that recessed wall cabinet, it's very cool! I built a *dish* pantry in my new kitchen for that very reason! Here is a picture from my old house of some built-in cabinets we did to give us some added storage for our LR/DR. We had them on each side of the doorway leading into the DR. You could always put glass doors on the upper part, we used them purely for displaying things and the lower part for dish storage. I can really relate to having way more stuff than storage space! Both my parents loved crystal and china. When my Mother passed away unexpectedly my sisters and I all inherited her vast collection of china and plates. My daughter once joked that Nana had enough dishes to feed an entire army from. The worst part of it all is I still find myself looking at dishes and glassware online...I don't need another dish or glass EVER! lol The DF "dresser" you referred to in the other post is actually a matching tea cart and it has two small drawers and then two shelves where I keep my silver chest, so not much actual storage. Here is our pantry cupboard to hold *some* of my many plates. It holds a ton of stuff because it's floor to ceiling! The top holds my stemware and the bottom is for platters and dishware. The middle hides my MW. Kat :)...See Morebase cabinet corner idea...would it work?
Comments (4)Do you have a picture? I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.... First, is this a new kitchen that you're planning or is it an existing kitchen that you want to modify? Next, are you saying you want to remove the 15" cabinet and corner susan (keeping in mind that a corner susan holds a lot) b/w the DW & corner and replace it with a 24" cabinet + 3" of filler. Then, round the corner and try to fit the 15" cabinet in the 12" space just vacated by the corner susan and then the range? A couple of things to consider: On the DW side, you will need enough filler to clear the range door + handle...and I don't think 3" will be enough. You will probably need more like 4" or 5". My SIL's cabinetmaker (custom) made that mistake and now has to open her oven to be able to open the drawers around the corner...and she has a low profile oven door handle. [You need more than 12" or 15" of space in front of cabinets to open drawers...more like 20" to 22"] Do you have this now? Remember that the 12" piece of the corner susan on the side acts as filler b/w the 15" cabinet and the corner and allows the drawer(s) in the existing 15" cabinet open fully. If you do intend to put the 15" cabinet in the space vacated by the corner susan next to the range... Is there anything on the other side of the range? More cabinets? Door & door trim? Something else? Nothing? Do you have enough room for not only the extra 3" of cabinet but also the 2" of filler or so that you'll need to clear the handles on the cabinets/drawers in the proposed new 24" cabinet around the corner? Even w/o doors on the 15" cabinet, you still need room to remove things from the cabinet w/o hitting the doors/drawer fronts and handles on the 24" cabinet. The cutting boards will probably be OK as long as you don't stuff the cabinet full b/c you can move everything over (or remove other things first) when taking out items on the end, but the toaster will be an issue if it just fits in that space. If it's a few inches narrower, then you may be able to do it... If this is an existing kitchen to be modified, what will you do for countertop above that extra 3" to 5" of cabinet that you're planning on adding b/w the range & existing countertop? While it would be nice to get more work room by doing this, think carefully b/f you do it. It may work, just do a lot of measuring first!...See MorePlease help Lazy Susan corner cabinet or Blind Corner Cabinet
Comments (69)Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME....See MoreUpper Cabinet Corner Ideas
Comments (6)Normally I would say having an upper line up with lowers isn't important but here it looks more like it does need to be balanced between the window and door. What would you do with open shelves - often a clutter magnet? Do you need them for storage? If the existing shelves are too small to be useful now, how would doors make them useful? If you can open them up to the main cabinet that would be fine, but I would be inclined (if possible to match wood, doors and finish) to get someone to remove the angle on one end, square off the other end, and reposition entire cabinet to be balanced between the window and door. Probably more cost effective to just buy a wider upper and install it....See MoreAimee
