its hard to tell what you are dealing w because the walls are so very yellow. the island and perimeter counters dont look to be the same..altho similar..the edges are different etc. does the floor have any kind of gray/green to work with..it looks so..perhaps. I'd consider new backsplash / very light gray green walls if that works w floor and a new top for the island/ even butcher block. This would not be very burdensome as far as costs.... I'd lean toward leaving cabinets alone. A kitchen in a "new to you" home is something you want to wait w big projects. But the yellow walls and bit " odd " island top are things to address . The cabinets, even "tweaks", would wait, for sake of restraint to calculate best options, down the road from now.

How exciting to move into a new home. Congratulations! I think the yellow is pretty, but if it's not your thing, you can tone it down with a celery green. I've seen a lot worse counters. These aren't bad at all and will look nice with green. I'd leave the backsplash alone until you change your counters. Live in the house a little and watch how the sun moves in there through the year and how it works for you.

I can only address the part where you asked about "what to do above the cabinets". If you asking about putting stuff up there, I would advise not to. Placing stuff above kitchen cabinets is dated, and isn't done anymore. Unless you have some cherished pieces you really love to display - but even in that case, those things should be displayed in a living room or den where people can see them, not up there in the shadows.

I notice you asked about pulls, but your cabinet doors and drawers have single-hole knobs. Therefore, unless you want to fill each of the knob holes (are there, like, 24 of them?), and then try to stain the filled spots to match the existing wood finish to make them not be noticeable, you should stay with knobs. I would just get some shiny polished chrome knobs to add some shine and brightness. Nothing fussy, OK?
