Is it really a full two inches extra? I am surprised the range was able to be raised that high to sit flush. Putting thinner countertops back on will mean redoing the backsplash, so buy extra tile now so maybe they can retrofit at the bottom. This will leave you with a partial tile at the bottom probably as well instead of a full tile.

Yeah it is the full two inches, I think the range is sitting on blocks the contractor built…I do have left over back splash so that is good. We are pretty tapped out on our budget so I am thinking I will place .75” perimeter comfort mats, hope for the best and try not to let this keep me up at night.

Typically only the very edge is doubled up so the tops remain at the normal height. Are you sure it was not done this way?

I think it looks gorgeous. I'd keep it. I'm 5'3" and could definitely have a slightly higher counter.

Uptowne - that’s a beautiful kitchen! I’d live with it a while and see how it feels. I’m barely 5’3” and my other home has 36-1/2” counters with the range grills adding at least another 1-1/2” or so. I’ve never been comfortable cooking and washing dishes. In a rental home now and what a pleasant difference. But you’ve got 2” on me so I think you’ll be ok. The room is lovely.

Get super comfy wedge shoes instead

These so called comfort mats are THE worst trip hazard ever created. Don't tell me about beveled edges. I have nearly killed myself on the stupid things in multiple homes.

Lift yourself! NOT the floor. You don't need the full gainer forward, trip/fall and head split open on an edge of the counter top like the darn melon you were slicing!

Now... THAT would be a "comfort" ....riiiiight lol.

I’m 5’3” and have a mitered edge. I love the look and I never noticed it being too high.

Uptowne - I actually love the padded mats I got from Costco. Yes, they have beveled edges. I’ve not tripped yet, but every kitchen/person is different. Surprisingly, I’ve had great luck with those puffy slip on shoes. They add about an 1” and are comfortable and I don’t trip or fall out of them. The best ones were Cushionaire brand from Amazon.

Are your uppers 21" above your counters?

I doubt her upper cabs leave more than 16 to 18 inches of back splash.......

18" is the minimum from the range to the upper cabinets.

I think it looks amazing. I am 5’3” and have 3” mitered countertops, have for many years and have no issues cooking, chopping etc., it’s never even popped into my head that it seemed too high.

IMO any mat or rug in a kitchen is a tripping hazard and I would be totally okay with it the way it is unless it does not function for you If I have my way all my counters would be 39" Just make sure your stools are adjustable .
