Window treatment for door with large portal? HELP
Comments (6)Terriks suggested the magnetic rod, which is certainly one good idea. You could also look at Command adhesive hooks to rest the rod on. We did this on my in-laws back door, hung drapery and worked well. A third alternative is to replace the insert with one that has the built-in blinds between the glass. Since you say this is a new door, perhaps you considered that option and chose not to do it, but I would check with the door mfg and see if they have the option, or purchase an after-market unit that is available at the home centers. If uncovering the window is not an issue, I would also look at using heavy-duty velcro (marine velcro) and mounting that on the door, then hanging a roman-look fabric shade lined with blackout lining. That velcro is very strong, tho I am not sure it could hold an operating blind, but certainly one that remains in place would be fine. Without seeing the room and the location of the door in the space, another choice could be to mount the rod high above the door and then stack back the curtains to one side during the day. But again, without seeing the space it is hard to know if that would work and look nice. Let me just say one other thing. If this is your space, and your door, and you are ALWAYS going to need to have the door covered, then I guess I don't see what the real problem would be with drilling into the door. It's not like a month from now you are going to decide you don't need the room dark when you sleep, or that you are moving. Pick a window treatment style that could be changed if you decide to change out your decor down the line - curtain rods that could take all kinds of window treatments would likely be best....See MoreWindow treatments on large recessed living room window
Comments (8)Hey there: you can easily install motorized roller shades to this window...inside mount with the installation to the top - remote controlled for your convenience. This way you keep the casing visible and don't block to much of your glass... The fabric options are almost endless - you can even go with zebra roller shades... Comments (15)@the Wiese Company: Yes, i looked at those since I just bought some for my upstairs office (blinds.com), which has the same new windows installed (albeit only half the width of the kitchen window). Unfortunately, with the trim around the window, the mounting bracket for the blinds are too thick to get a good looking inside mount. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy these with thinner mounting brackets? @luckyblueye: I’m thinking exactly of the reason that Anglophilia posted after you why I’m hesitant of curtains, even though they’re washable, but how often do I really want to wash curtains? @Anglophilia: I’m not a huge fan of awning. Especially for that part of the deck since it is pretty narrow (and not the main part we hang out on), so besides the sun/privacy it would have no use outside. But it’s a good thought otherwise! @Sara Sitardites: I like the idea of shutters, but not really the price tag... :) do you have a recommendation on where to buy them? Also, similar thing as with honeycomb blinds above, there is not much space within the window “box” for installation because of the trim. Did you run into a problem there? Thanks everybody!...See MoreHelp with large window treatments (draperies OR curtains etc.)?
Comments (12)ninegret - that is a good idea w/ the 3 shades. I can ask a store but I'm curious how they would attach since we don't have 3 separate windows, it's one long window. The other issue is the middle window is about 10inches longer than the two outside so would you order one long shade or 3 separate and hang them from the top? I also agree french doors would be nice but we don't want to spend thousands to demo and close off that area and create french doors when there is a door to the 'game room' a couple feet to the left of the couch. It's a very large living room that is completely open to our kitchen and dining room on the other 2 sides and a fire place on the 3rd side so there are no other windows/coverings. It's an odd look that is difficult to figure out how to decorate so I appreciate the suggestions and any further comments. The previous owners had a good thought to enclose the back deck and make it a game room but it's created a little confusion on how to decorate the existing 'former' exterior window....See Morenfreckle
