Given the need to access outside, wonder if going too small will look skimpy but if too big, a tripping hazard. As well, table is not centered under chandelier and a rug may only emphasize that. Suggest taping out some standard rug sizes, which is your first decision. A style and color should be based on what is also going on in living room, so it’s hard to suggest. If green is used as well, maybe that is a good jumping off point. I’d keep it simple and one below from Wayfair comes in various sizes and note durability and reviews. The more understated, the easier to incorporate into various styles.

If it were me, I’d skip a rug and add clay centrepiece (remove runner), larger art and if possible, a linear chandelier hung horizontally with table’s length and may fool the eye a bit with not being centered…or try table over a bit to resolve.

I would suggest a rug with neutral colors and possibly a bit of green to complete the wall art. Since the floors are more traditional but the dining set is more contemporary, a rug with a transitional-styled pattern could work well or you could go with a fiber to add visual texture against the hard surfaces. I would also definitely suggest lowering the light fixture and centering it on the table and, even better, consider a more unique lighting fixture to add more style.

Try your art one above the other on wall facing hallway. From proportional and visual perspectives, it will be more appreciated. Large art on the focal wall will better define/balance the room.

Rug size 8 x 10 would be best according to my research. The room is 145 inches x 145 inches. The balcony is from a second floor. So above ground.

You can try some rugs in the space virtually and see the effect each one has on the room.

New linear chandelier would be a better choice.

A distressed rug might meet your traditional/modern criteria and could work well with the runner?? and couch. One below is 8x10 and below your budget. There are lots out there if you like the look.

If you are only seating 4 …try removing some of the table extensions…allowing a smaller rug to work..less money and less tripping hazard..(and possibly room for a foot rug at the door)a wool tufted rug will be easier to spot clean..is less expensive, and holds up well over time

I agree with btydrvn, try removing the table leaf and centre the table under the light for everyday. Is it easy to lower the light? It looks like the light could be lowered as the chain seems to be looped. I used to hang my dining room light up with a S hook when I played ping pong on my table and let it down the rest of the time. Maureen and Beverly suggested great transitional rugs. Would you be able to put the third plant by the window with the others. Groups of 3 tend to look nice and the plant should be by the window. You might want to pull the plants out just a bit to give them some a bit more breathing space.

I made a couple of changes and might have to go smaller on the rug choice yes. I like the rugs suggested from Wayfair with the Diamond shape and the distressed green suggested by Maureen. With all that said I could not find them on this rug website where I got to try out the rooms in the room. Here are a couple looks. I also changed the art like Maureen suggested. Here is an update

I don’t want change the chandelier because this is a rental, but I possibly could if it clashes too much with the art on the wall. I raised it up. It did not look good down…

Here are different ways, table can face. I like it the long way better.

By long way I mean the short side of table touching the wall with the art.

The linear table layout ….with the buffet(?) (that sticks out in the doorway)…placed on the “ art wall” ….the chandelier may center better….the seating will be nicer if the light from the window is available to all the seating…not in any ones eyes

My favorite rug so far, suggested by Maureen. The rug has light green and has more of the transitional style, I think would look best.

With the artwork vertical(not doing anything for your space) you have too much wall space on the left. It was better horizontally placed.

Any final thoughts, opinions before I purchase the rug? And Thank you all so much for your help on this!!

One thought - is that it is a good idea to purchase the smallest size first, when you can - so you can check for color, texture, and how the rug actially appears in your space with your lighting, etc. This helps to avoid having to potentially send back a huge rug, if it doesn’t work and/or if you just don’t like it in real time

If you like that rug - for sure try it.

I will just say that you do not necessarily have to match your wall art; and sometimes it’s better not to try matching the art . Art really stands on its own. And you don’t necessarily have to incorporate any green in the DR rug; you can, of course, but you do not have to.

My approach - would be to let the art be the art, and to moreso connect the DR rug with the overall spaces.

The easiest option to see the rug colors and quality….is to order the rug in a small size that you can just keep … (not have to return)…they are much better quality and price for spots like this…

I also chose rug runners like these for bathroom..walk-in closet and kitchen…still look perfect after many years

Did you try your art vertically on the wall next to sliding door (never meant in large wall). It will create a nice balance with large plant on other side and be appreciated from hallway. Then consider large art on the long wall over your sideboard.

Your rug choice is nice. The sideboard looks better on that wall as well. Funny how just moving stuff around can make a difference.
