Picking granite that isn't/won't become dated
Comments (44)I am a fabricator. I have been following this thread with interest and find it contains a lot of disinformation and skewed perspectives. Over half my business is high end homes where money is often not a consideration and interior designers are common. Natural stone is still the preferred material for the majority of the work we do even though we provide a wide variety of engineered surfaces includes the various quarts brands and the new materials like Dekton. The quartz products are rapidly losing the panache they enjoyed for years as the new alternative to natural stone. This change has been exacerbated by the emergence of discount brands and discounting among the big suppliers as they fight for market share. Granite has changed in that "exotics" are much more prevalent and alternative finishes to the traditional polish are increasingly common. The buying public has also become more educated and recognizes the actual maintenance for natural stone is minimal unless the material is one of the alternates like marble or travertine which have inferior material properties. My advice to my customers is always to pick the "look" they want and make sure they understand the material properties. Marble is extraordinarily beautiful but it is only a little harder than jello, wicks up liquids like a sponge, and dissolves readily in common organic acids like acetic acid....See MoreWhich granite style would work with this kitchen remodel?
Comments (42)After visiting 2 granite yards, we visited the 2nd yard another time and found our selection that we really like. It turns out it's New Venetian Gold. It's honey colored, cream, ivory, brown, black, grey, and garnet. We had taken home a sample before and thought it was NVG, it was actually St. Cecilia (which was too orange and busy for us). This is the real NVG...it has garnet flecks all over and is gorgeous! There's a wild white/clear quartz vein that runs through it on the bottom right of the slab. I hope you all agree it's the one! And if all the NVG is eradicated in the Earth before our remodel, our 2nd choice will be Giallo Ornamental. :) We didn't get to bring a sample home to compare to the floors, but I think it'll work. Demo starts next week!! Here is a link that might be useful: Final granite choice...See Morehelp!! new cabinet drawers won’t open
Comments (61)I told you at the beginning that you hired a hack. Nothing has changed my mind about that. It’s just reinforced it. You lied to yourself about the job on the front end. You jumped all over a TANSTAAFL “deal” that was too good to be true. You didn’t even bother to do your due diligence, or you’d have found the lapsed license. And probably a whole lot more. Even if your kitchen is smaller than the average 12x14 space that costs 63K to redo for a mid range project, $6700 is about 20K short of where you should be for labor. That’s another warning sign that you ignored. When something is way to cheap to be real, you’re not getting real. You’re getting the fake Rolex from the guy in the trench coat in the alley. You ignored all the warnings. It’s why you are where you are at now. If the complaint is eligible for small claims court, good. You won’t need to hire a lawyer beyond a couple of hours of a basic consult. But you have zero documentation for anything to consult about. That’s not good. You probably need to chalk this up to a semester of college tuition in What NOT to Do When Hiring a Contractor. If you learn something from it, the tuition wasn’t wasted. If you didn’t learn, and keep trying to find something for nothing, then you’ll just get scammed over and over....See Morefloors and paint, do they clash or match match?
Comments (12)@nuppal I still like the gray better… Especially in light of your countertops and the fireplace… And I looked up your color on Pinterest and I saw that color walls with different colored wood floors and I thought it looked nice. But as another poster said it’s all a personal preference. I personally don’t like beige walls so I guess I’m biased! Haha But the new house we’re building has wood floors and gray walls and is the Joanna Gaines type style… And its similar to yours and that we have the white quartz countertops with the gray marbling and I have white cabinets in my kitchen and white builtins in my living room. Most of our walls are gray… Different shades of gray (Mostly with blue undertones because that’s what I like)....See MoreRelated Professionals
