Picking granite that isn't/won't become dated
Comments (44)I am a fabricator. I have been following this thread with interest and find it contains a lot of disinformation and skewed perspectives. Over half my business is high end homes where money is often not a consideration and interior designers are common. Natural stone is still the preferred material for the majority of the work we do even though we provide a wide variety of engineered surfaces includes the various quarts brands and the new materials like Dekton. The quartz products are rapidly losing the panache they enjoyed for years as the new alternative to natural stone. This change has been exacerbated by the emergence of discount brands and discounting among the big suppliers as they fight for market share. Granite has changed in that "exotics" are much more prevalent and alternative finishes to the traditional polish are increasingly common. The buying public has also become more educated and recognizes the actual maintenance for natural stone is minimal unless the material is one of the alternates like marble or travertine which have inferior material properties. My advice to my customers is always to pick the "look" they want and make sure they understand the material properties. Marble is extraordinarily beautiful but it is only a little harder than jello, wicks up liquids like a sponge, and dissolves readily in common organic acids like acetic acid....See MoreFull overlay cabinet doors hit each other/won't close properly
Comments (50)Thanks again for all these helpful tips and suggestions. Sophie and salex: Regarding adjusting the hinges in all dimensions, I have already tried adjusting all the screws (that is why the cabinet door in the right is a little higher than the one on the left) and it just seemed to make everything worse. But I can try again. Do you have suggestions for how to go about doing this? Should I adjust them all to one extreme or the other and then start tweaking various dimensions? you noticed that the doors are not parallel at the top but what you can’t see is that due to my adjustments the doors on the double cabinet are “out” or forward of all the other doors in the bank. I did have a “cabinet handyman” come out and try the same and he was unable to align them so that they could close. He got good reviews on Angie’s List but maybe he just didn’t know what he was doing? I’d gladly pay someone with experience and expertise to come and do it for me - my own experience was that each adjustment made the overlap even worse than before, so I stopped....See MorePaint for built-ins that won’t clash with trim? HELP!
Comments (5)I think it depends on the style of the buitins are they covering the whole wall? I find a desk in a sitting room a bit odd unless now this will actually be an office. I would use the same white as the trim with that wall color .why make an issue that does not need to be addressed ....See MoreI need help with choosing a laminate floor color that won’t clash.
Comments (13)If you go with wood look I would lean towards a medium to darker floor... A tone similar to the dark knots in the wall..... It could look really nice, just have to be more careful when pairing a fake wood floor up against a real wood.... It can be done, just take your time and maybe take an extra wall board with good color variation to help you select a right match. The colors in this floor are nice as it gives you more options with a blend of medium and darker tones......See MoreHU-139571334
