Katlan, that looks like my Walmart delivery guy. I don't know how he manages so many bags in one trip.

Living in the the countryside 6 mi. from a village (12 - 15 from the city) without a car for a year and a half and city bus coming just to the village ... I tip my hat to that Walmart delivery guy! But he may be less able to get so loaded, if you'll pardon the expression, when he gets to 80+.

I've found when hitchhiking home with a load of groceries after leaving the bus in the village that many go beyond their destination or out of their way to bring my haul to my door. When I offer some payment from my substantial savings by not operating a car for a year, some accept but many refuse ... so I repeat the offer, asking them to give the money to church or charity, which some accept.

I am rather surprised that more than half of the persons giving me rides are female, (seldom of the youngish variety, understandably).

Oh, Joyful, it rather pains me that you have to walk and hitch rides at this point in your life. I guess it works for you, and probably makes "your" drivers feel good to have helped you out. Can you remind us how old you are now?

Born in 1929; so 10 years old when World War II started in 1939 for many countries ... was 71 at the turn of the century, 23 years ago so, birthday past, I'm now 94.

These old legs weren't sufficiently photogenic to have won any beauty contests even at a sixth to a quarter of their present age, I figure.

And don't dream of suggesting that I hitchhike in 4" heels!
