Shaker Cabinet Style
Comments (45)I paid an up charge to have the 2.25" rails/stiles for the shaker door style I picked. The shaker door style I have has solid wood rails/stiles with plywood middle panel, it comes standard with 2.75" rails/stiles, the all solid wood version comes standard with thinner rails/stiles. It was still cheaper for me to pay the up charge for the plywood middle panel as that's the only different between two versions. The KD did told me ahead of time that the top drawers will have even thinner rails since I picked out the 5 pcs construction and I was ok with that. For the other drawer that can accommodate 2.25" rails have 2.25 rails. Only the top drawer has a reduced rails. I have attached a picture of my coffee counter that shows two doors and a top drawer with thinner rails. I haven't take any pictures after the kitchen is completed as now I am trying to get my cooktop repaired and have set up a temporary portable unit there so it's not good for pictures taking. Hope this helps!...See MoreChanging old flat panel birch cabinets to shaker style??
Comments (10)I had similar cabinets and here are the options I found: 1. Cut out the centers (leaving just a frame around) and insert new panels inside that frame. I didn't opt for this option because my edges were pretty beaten up. 2. You can apply a "edge", like you mentioned, but you won't be able to really cover up the routed edges. You'd have to fill them with auto body filler and then sand - lot of work. 3. Get some poplar wood and plywood and using just a table saw, glue, and clamps you can build completely new shaker style doors. I built 12 doors and it cost me about $150 for the materials. It was totally worth it. The cabinets look like new!!!! If I knew how to, I'd post some pictures. Love the end effect!...See More"Best" Shaker style door
Comments (10)My beveled cherry is over a year old and I haven't once had to get out the Q-tips to clean the corners. It looks like traditional Shaker until you look up close. Let's face it, people vow they'll clean more when they get a new kitchen, but that only lasts a few months before the novelty wears off, then you're back to your old cleaning habits....See MoreGaps in kitchen cabinets shaker style
Comments (17)The doors are built with the gap for the purpose of allowing stain to get into the gap so that when the panels shrink, bare unstained wood is not revealed. On paint-grade doors this millwork detail becomes a problem for the painter. I observe in the leftmost pic, of the top rail/stile joint, the rail has shrunk narrower than the top of the stile. Your house is too dry! Humidify, or it's going to get worse in January. Don't caulk that, it makes more and worse problems down the road. The panel floats and expands/contracts seasonally, so filling that seam is a losing battle unless you can micro-control the temp and humidity year round. Use a small thin blade to break the paint "webs" between the frame and panel, but without marring the finish. Vac. out the debris....See MoreHelen Spiel
