What size/shape table for my new TINY dining room?
Comments (20)geokid, I forgot about Young House Love's kitchen...I've seen theirs before. It looks great. I'm afraid their kitchen is bigger than mine though. wendyb, your space looks wonderful. In the pictures it doesn't look cramped at all to me. You might have more room widthwise and less room lengthwise than I do. I can see how traffic patterns could be a challenge. If we go with a rectangular table I'll probably run it lengthwise in our space. I looked around the web for a while yesterday and I came up with this photo which looks like similar space and layout to what I have. This has a round table, but I'm not sure what size it is (I think I'd be looking for somewhere in the 44-48" range). It has both chairs and barstools: I also found this one which has chairs similar to what I've ordered. Mine are the armless version though and mine have wood legs not chrome. Also, this space is quite a bit larger than mine. I definitely like the chairs with this style of table:...See MoreDesign options U Shape or L shape?
Comments (14)particularly if you stick with the U plan=all those cabs will be sandwiched together-you can get RTA flat packed sent to your door. Try Scherrs or Barkers-the latter can give you an online quote. these are good cabinets.Use graph paper and figure out what cabinets go where-plug it in and see what you get for the best you desire-drawers! Cheaper carcasses can be had from Ikea but the sizes are limited-can be done though-and you can get better doors from Scherr's. this is your starting point. Repurpose the glass doors[paint them??] on newer carcasses for the wall?? I would start with something like quartersawn oak with the factory furniture finish from Barkers for the base-it's a good finish-and maybe switch to a paint grade door for the uppers-you could easily have the uppers painted for you. or stick with the same quartersawn oak for the uppers-but just get a couple main dish cabs and leave some blank wall for open shelves. If this all comes in affordable-you could have the kitchen designer help do an island with detail because you've saved on the perimeter. If you liked that white kitchen-another way to price is paint grade on the perimeter and let the designer do a darker stained wood island and have that match the tall pantry etc over on the right. I don't think you realize how easy this all would be/why? bcause the configuration is straightforward-the walls are in-you are replacing. the redesign is only in your colors/finishes and adding the island. Put the thoughts on the look you desire-you can easily get the price to where you wish it to be.....you must be thorough in searching on the internet though and then access local hanydmen with paint/install/etc, if you folks are not super DIY'ers. Take that white kitchen expanded to the U shape with some sort of island in the foreground[not sure about sizes on that issue]...really pretty -and your floor is already in!...See MoreWhat to do with my oddly shaped brick fireplace
Comments (41)I honestly feel like if you just remove the tile to the right of the chimney, it will just make it look like a crooked fireplace....people will look at it and scratch their heads. At least with the tile it looks more like a design choice. It might not be your design choice, but it will look like someone had a plan that they executed. If you decide to change out the tile, look at fireclay tile. I think it would work here. Leah, like anything having to do with...well anything...so much depends on your tolerance level. There's "I can't stand it it must go yesterday" AAAAALLLLLL the way to "I love it!!!..It's mine and will become THE focal point in my house". You're the only one who knows where you are on the scale. Watch out that any stop-gap measures don't leave you with worse than what you started with, though :) If you choose to get rid of the tile and just have the drywall...you need to make sure it's not a "normal" pendant. It needs to be a kick-ass pendant. So don't replace what you have with anything featured in the Restoration Hardware catalog... :-/...See MoreWeirdly shaped island ... do I have options?
Comments (18)Q - is that a 90 degree corner where walls meet? Just asking because third photo makes it look like far wall is angled vs. squared. I have an odd shaped island in my kitchen (has five sides instead of four) - but that’s because my kitchen has a u-shaped cabinet area with one angled wall (over 90 degrees where one set of walls meet). I never really thought about it being an odd shape until I started hanging out on Houzz 18 months ago! I can’t change the angle because it’s an outside wall (well, I could but it would be $$$!) Luckily, I had builder make it all one level when I designed my kitchen MANY years ago (he thought it was a really bad decision to not raise the end where stools go - but I never liked raised bars on islands - was difficult to find counter height stools - had to cut legs down!) Also, I don’t have any appliances in island - so, lots of work space. I’ve never understood odd shaped islands in kitchens that don’t have an angled wall. If your walls are 90 degrees - I would definitely change the shape (if you are willing to spend the money to do so). Would the aisles work better if you turned the entire island 90 degrees so it runs parallel with sink wall? Looks like you would have to rethink your table area. Do you have a dining room also - or is this the only area for a table? If you need extra seating at a table in your kitchen, you could either (i) incorporate a table at the end of your island: or (ii) do some sort of built in seating along the walls: I’ve seen some along walls with lower windows - a former neighbor bought some lower banquette seating at Pottery Barn to use in front of two walls with lower windows - looked great....See Moreamor320
