I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. The Bain Ultra tubs (and I would think most airbubble tubs) are very low maintenance unlike many whirlpool tubs that need monthly cleansing cycles. Resale-wise I think alot of people are looking for a master bath with a tub that does something therapeutic, so I don't think it matters if it's air or whirlpool. If you're not worried about resale, I would say do what you feel is right for your lifestyle. Having the air gives you the choice of using the tub as a soaker or as a therapeutic option if your back is hurting, you've pulled a muscle, etc. With the soaker, soaking is the only option you have. I personally, like to leave my options open. Just my $0.02.

Thank you for your comments. I'm not sure what type of material the unit is made of, but it's in perfect shape and it's been well used for many years. The people who built the home used high quality finishes throughout and I expect this unit could last another 25 years or so and still look pretty good! :) This is the "children's/guest" bathroom, we plan on being in the home for at least another 5 years and then will downsize. The tub is not unsafe, you can sit in the edge. And it was brought in during the build, and will have to cut in half to take out of the house (my neighbour replaced hers recently). It won't be possible to bring in another one piece unit due to the size but I did look at Swanstone one piece unit, and something like that might work. I'm in Canada (Sask.) and wonder if they carry that or a similar product here. And regarding something like the Swanstone, does it look like a quality, high end product? I've seen some that don't...:) I'm going to keep looking at Houzz and at products and keep pondering, see if other ideas/experiences come in. Thanks so much.

the inspiration pick is pretty much the floorplan. I admire your dedication to this "12 inches around every freestanding tub" that you post on literally every single thread involving any be question about a freestanding tub, but that's super unreasonable in 99 precent of all spaces and I've never seen it recommended anywhere else. even giant palatial bathrooms rarely have a foot around the tub. 4 inches is a much more common recommendation, but I'm not even going to have that and it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I'll have about 2 inches - much like the inspiration pic. I'm fine with that. I do appreciate your comments on paint color, though, as those address the question I asked. and I am adding a dimmer. I like the black fixtures since it's a small bathroom so I don't think it will be too overpowering, but brushed nickel would have been nice, as well.
