Recycled Glass Countertops

Does anyone have recycled glass countertops? We would be using in bathrooms and kitchen.

We were told they are essentially made the same way quartz is made, just glass instead of quartz mixed with resin.

I would love to see photos as well as hear feedback on:

do they stain easily? (Oils, food coloring, etc)
any etching?
have you had issues with cleaning chemicals damaging them?
any issues with damage from hot pans

I was just about to give up on our countertop search when I was shown these samples and it is exactly what I visualized - just want to make sure it’s a solid investment in terms of durability!

Now, that is hilarious! We know quartz is 1/3 plastic resins, and will melt and scortch with heat…just the lid off a hot pot will do it. Read the many threads on this site. Also, certain spices will stain white quartz. We’ve seen that posted here, too, especially from folks who cook with Indian spices.

It would be prudent not to take the words from that link as the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

It's been a few years, but I seem to recall an example of a recycled glass counter material of some type at a big box store in our area. You might want to just call the biggies and ask. We seriously considered Enviroglas but went with stone.

Actor, Ed Begley, Jr, is a super enviromentalist and had a show regarding green home products on HGTV last year called 'living with ed'. He and his wife updated their kitchen with glass counter and here's what he has to say about them, pulled from his website, link provided below: After the episode 'Point-Counter-Point' aired a few weeks ago, I've been flooded with emails asking about our new kitchen countertops. A lot of you want to know more about them, and where they can find them. The company that created the countertops made from recycled material is Vetrazzo. They take different materials to come up with various colors and designs. They use anything from broken glass thrown out in recycling bins to used traffic lights. I think it's a creative way to take objects that most would consider trash and turn it into something functional and beautiful. The top that Rachelle and I ended up choosing is called 'Hollywood Sage' and is made from broken up soda bottles. There are over 1,000 bottles used just to make the countertop for our small kitchen. We considered them for our new homes. In fact, it was one of the first things I researched. They are really pretty, and we love the green aspect of them. There are several manufacturers, like Vetrazzo Enviroglass, and Icestone. But, since they are cement + recycled glass, they need to be babied quite a bit: resealed every 6 -12 months, standing liquids (coffee, tea, wine, lemon juice, etc.) can seep and stain. That just doesn't work for your family. If you still want the look of recycled glass, but not the high maintenance of cement, look at quartz. Lots of quartz options have recycled glass in it. Much more durable and doesn't need all the resealing. You can find any of the major fabricators anywhere you'd find granite. Despite the marketing, all the brands are made in the same way, so find a color or style you like, and buy the least expensive one. We're going with Hanstone Specchio White (it's fabricated near Toronto, which is closer to us that Cambria in Minnesota). It is white resin with green and silver recycled class. The glass counters are gorgeous. My dentist has them.

There really are no bullet proof counter materials. Hot pots can crack granite. My friend is not particularly careful and her marble kitchen counter and kitchen table still looks great. I can’t imagine glass is more problematic than quartz and most people are fine using reasonable care 🤷‍♀️

I have a 4" sample of GEO brand recycled glass counter top similar to the speckled photo posted above. it's used as a hot pad/ trivit. No heat issues. It also hasn't been dropped or cut o so I can not report on that. My 3 year old kitchen counter looks like your sample but is an off brand Corian. So far any dirt or stains wipe clean with a wet dishrag within 48 hours.

I've bashed, sawn, torched, scorched, axed and sledge-hammered kitchen counters. They've all failed. :-((

But we're considering re-cycled glass as well for its colourful look. Not for its street fighting prowess.
