need help picking out dining room table and chairs
Hello, I want to put a dining table and chairs behind the couch. The length from column to wall with lamp is about 124inches and from the wall to back of the couch is 72 but can potentially be 90 if we pushed the sofa forward. We want something that can seat maybe 4-6 people and not take away from the view. Any additional suggestions to make the space prettier are also appreciated.

Comments (14)Thanks for all your advice. I'm so glad that I didn't just rush in and start this. From the sounds of it, I WOULD HAVE ruined them . . . :^0 . . . OMGosh! I need to run all this by DH. He's been encouraging me to call up and order a set I like that I saw in Phoenix Home & Garden magazine spread. I can't imagine ordering anything that big and expensive sight unseen, though. Hmmmmmm, there may be a weekend trip to Scottsdale in the offing ;^) In the mean time, I need to decide whether I want to paint the set a brown first and them give the Gel Stain a go or just leave it as is until I get a new set. BTW, I haven't looked into having it professionally stripped and redone. I probably should. I can't imagine a red or blue table in our dining room, though. Comments (15)50-ish, if you find one at 45 or so that you like don't discount it just because of the LRV number. Unless there are standards/color specs involved, LRV is more like a loosey-goosey guideline, not a formula or prescription to follow. And, yes, colors with a higher LRV number have better odds of delivering the light and airy atmosphere you're after vs. darker colors. A dramatically shifting paint color has more to do with its own metameric tendencies vs. the quality of light. A rule of thumb is if your color stays consistent in appearance when viewed in fluorescent and incandescent lighting, it will *probably* be consistent in any light source. More about north light: North exposure is not direct rays of sunlight. Very different from south light beaming into your kitchen almost all day long, or the morning sun bursting through your east facing bedroom windows at the break of day. North light isn’t necessarily reflecting or bouncing off of something else to get inside the space, it’s just that when your windows face north you don’t have actual, direct beams of light entering fenestration. North light is the most balanced from a spectral distribution perspective, it has a nice, even collection of all the wavelengths though it tends to be heavier in the blue range. Because it’s a balanced bundle of wavelengths and also because it is not a direct beaming, or spot-light effect of natural light, north facing rooms are ideal for any kind of artistic work environment. The pronounced blue of north light is a factoid that's been blown way out of proportion. Blogosphere has taken that one single aspect of north light and made a huge deal out of it - I guess because it makes a good 'sound bite' or something. I dunno. But it's kind of a dumb thing to hyper-focus on. Heavy in blue doesn't mean it's gray. Doesn't necessarily mean it's cool either. Comments (10)I think the end tables should be dark and then add contrast with the curtains,rug, art, pillows, and cocktail table....see pics below for inspiration. Finish the living area before you start on the dining table as they will need to look like they relate to each other...... This room is example of added colors in the accessories and they all coordinate such that the sofa could be any color and the room would look finished. Here is another example of accessories finishing the room....the end tables and the sofa table and the floor are all similar in color but not matching, the the accessories give it punch all thru the room....fireplace, sofa, end table plant, stuffed benches, etc....the valances are the same color as the wall but they add weight to the room and add architectural interest to the windows, where as your curtains are not doing it....the sofa is way heavy and the accessories need more weight and well, just more in the room....See MoreRelated Professionals

@Anna D if you live be glass, get it anyway; you have big glass windows if you are worried about not having other glass things. My hubby and I eat most meals at a bistro table and two fake wicker chairs. All three are a dark almost black. It has a glass top. But if company comes, we have to go to the dining room or outside. If it's just you two, go bistro. Otherwise try a table for four. Several follow...

last yearI would suggest a narrow table against the windows without chairs on the window side. It doesn't look like there is enough space to have a standard width table with chairs on all sides.

@Elle that's perfect but I can't find who is selling it. Can you? So @Anna D I agree with Elle that your best bet is a long narrow expandable table that you place against the wall. Seat people along the side and when crowder, at each end and expand the table too. Google "long/narrow/expandable dining table" to get these options, often on Wayfair.

A long narrow table will also serve as a great buffet table. For chairs, I liked Elle's light wire ones, did you? I tried googling for transparent chairs and got what some call ghost chairs of clear hard plastic. Some are stackable! That may help you. But then I googled "wire/chair" and got something I really love given the view of the cable suspension bridge. And I like the slim cushioned sheets. What do you think?

I’d consider a table that fits behind your sofa. Search ’dining table behind sofa’ for lots of ideas.

I agree with jinx. Also search for "drop leaf dining table" -- with this you can put against the sofa like in jinx's examples and then expand when needed.
