Blood Meal: Slow or Fast Acting?
Comments (9)I'm going to disagree :-) "Fast acting" is very common, even accepted, terminology when it comes to fertilizers. And there is a difference between nutrients and fertilizers. Nutrients are the base ingredients, a variety of 18 or so chemical elements necessary for plant growth and health - fertilizers are merely the delivery vehicles. Plants access nutrients only in the form of soluble ions. Synthetic fertilizers tend to present nutrients in highly soluble forms, therefore the nutrients are readily, even immediately available. Immediately or readily available = fast acting. That's why they coat or prill various synthetic ferts to control or slow down the release of nutrients over a period of time. Most organically sourced fertilizers are insoluble and require the activities of soil organisms to convert them into the soluble ions the plant roots can access. And that takes time and is also influenced by climate, soil moisture and soil temperatures as well. That's why most organic ferts are considered naturally 'slow release'....See MoreCrazy acting Koi
Comments (13)OK.....slow down a second. First.....dechlorinator will not do anything for pH. But if your pH is stable, you don't need to do anything for it. Check you kH. That is the level of alkalinity, which is the stabilizing factor for pH. Do not do anything to lower your pH or you may kill the fish. Fish cannot handle a rapid decrease of pH. You DO need dechlorinator though, because of your city water. Make sure your dechlorinator also handles ammonia, because your city water probably has ammonia in it. Ammonia will make fish flash and also lethargic, like you are describing. Prazi pond is not an all-purpose parasite treatment. It only treats for flukes and multiple treatments are necessary. It can be used along with dechlorinator. But don't treat for parasites yet....your fish issues are probably due to water quality and not parasites. So get a test kit....the kind that uses drops and not the strip kind. Check for pH, kH, ammonia and nitrite and post the results here. Also check the pond temperature. If the larger fish are hanging out in the waterfalls, there is a very good chance your oxygen levels are too low. Low oxygen affects larger fish first. They are hanging out by the waterfalls because oxygen levels are highest there. You need to get some aeration going in that pond as soon as possible or you may lose them, especially the big ones....See MoreFirst soil test results: Any suggestions for a newbie tester? pic
Comments (6)Good for you. This is a very informative result sheet. But doesn't the state of Ohio do cheap soil tests? Most states do (not California, though). 1. People routinely mistake silt soils for clay--I did the same thing long ago. Silt can be compacted almost as badly as clay, so you need to be careful about digging or stepping on it when it is wet. Your soil may have slightly less clay than is optimal, depending on how fine the clay is. However, a CEC of 17 indicates good nutrient retention. Silt holds water very well. 2. The yellowing of foliage--I'd predict--leaves the main veins still green, and it shows on the new leaves as soon as they open. This is iron deficiency caused by the high pH, despite there being lots of iron in the soil. Apply the 6 cups of sulfur per 100 sq ft evenly under the mulch and scratch it in lightly. It will take a year or so to lower the pH applied in this way. Then you will have greener leaves. Meanwhile you could apply an iron product according to directions--it may or may not help. Micronized sulfur, available at a good garden center, works fastest. 3. High magnesium: never apply Epsom salts. 4. Major nutrients: (N)-- This is just a normal requirement to add some source of nitrogen every year, regardless of the soil test. (K)--I disagree with the greensand recommendation, it is an expensive product because you need to use a huge amount of it. They mention it because there is no ideal organic source for straight potassium. Rose Tone or a balanced manufactured fertilizer will give all the N and K you need. (P)--You need not apply phosphorus and should avoid high-P fertilizer. 5. I think the gypsum recommendation is superfluous but probably harmless. Are these folks trying to sell you stuff?...See MoreNeed VERY fast growing shade vines and trees
Comments (8)eadaein, I've done a bit of research on this subject and have this to say about that! I chose a Shamel Ash for the front yard. It's a fast grower, looks great now and this is its first spring. For the backyard I'm planning a 'second patio' area that will be three Royal Poinciana's in a grouping, each tree about 20' apart. I believe they are also fast growers and will grow to a wide, flat umbrella if properly trained. The only thing about that Indian Rosewood is the upright shape. For a shade tree I prefer a wide crown, rounded crown or even the vase-shape to an upright. But it depends too on where the tree is going, etc, etc. There is a free booklet available at most nurseries called Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert. It has lots of great information. For example, they list the Indian Rosewood tree as a fast grower (40' x 30')with an upright shape, low litter, no thorns and it's a large shade tree. Eucalyptus grow fast but I hate those trees. Re: the vines the booklet says cat claw grows fast but can damage walls and fences. Think about Lady Banks roses, little maintenance, fast grower, thick evergreen. I guess I would put a sturdy trellis around the house for whatever you plant to climb up so it's not climbing right onto the house. Just an idea. HTH and good luck. Mary...See Morewoodrose
