Have anyone started anything besides Hostas this year yet?
Comments (9)Yep!! I buy Caladiums every year. The day they come out as bulbs in any "big box" store, I always buy 2 bags, take them home and pot them up....put in a warm place out of direct sun....last year I got caladiums going faster yet using a heat mat on low setting... then after last frost, plant them outside. I wait until May here. It's alot cheaper than buying potted ones that are all leafed out already, and it beats waiting for them to sprout if you just plant the bulbs outside. You can dig them up in fall and try to over-winter them, but I never bother....See MoreWhy aren't my hostas up yet?
Comments (8)and a glorious perfectly worded searchable title .. my.. you are a fast learner ... WELCOME to the world of participation ... WE WILL ENABLE YOU FURTHER .... when i moved.. up here in z5 ... i potted and moved 1500 hosta ... 65 miles SW .... half went into the polebarn ... and the rest stacked on their sides on the west side of the barn ... the ones inside the barn ... sprouted out 2 months early .... which is a gigantic problem up here where it can freeze thru april.. and frost through may ... never underestimate the effect of pots, per se ... next ... you claim they will come up no matter how deep you bury them ... first.. never compare what a species can do .. and what a foo foo plant can do ... but regardless of the type.. the deeper it is planted.. the longer it will take the soil to warm.. to the level needed ... to trigger active growth but the bottom line.. they are hosta.. GO FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT ... crimminy sakes ... they will come up.. when they come up.. and not a minute sooner ... no matter how much you worry about them and as you noted.. the longer it takes for them to come up.. the smaller your chance of getting them frosted is... so see.. there is an upside ... and.. as a further example... on the south side of my house... i can put a shovel all the way in .. on the north side ... its frozen solid ... good luck ken...See MoreAnyone else not get all their bulbs in the ground yet?
Comments (11)I am so mad at myself for not getting my bulbs in the ground this past fall. What a waste. I don't even have the heart to look at the catalogs for spring. I was just too busy to get them in the ground, now I wasted so much money by leaving them in the garage. I was going to plant some at my sister's new house, but we never could get our dates on the same page, now neither of us has new bulbs in for the spring. I thought about getting some pots and potting soil and trying to get them potted up for spring bloom, but I don't know if that would work. I could at least bring them over to her and she could have them on her front and back porches.. I have so many different types, too. I don't have the heart to go out there and take a look at them. Someday I will venture out, but right now, I am very upset with myself....See MoreAnyone else loose hostas
Comments (21)Ha ha, Paul! The cowboy roping theme wasn't exactly what I was thinking when I read the title. ;) Okay, so since others are listing their losses, here's the list of mine (P for potted, G for in ground): Andrew (P) Blue Lollipop (P) Cameo (P) Change of Heart (G) Cherry Tomato (P) Chirp (P) Country Mouse (P) Dragon Tails (P) Faith (P) Hope (P) Irish Luck (P) Itsy Bitsy Spider (P) Jack Of Diamonds (G) Lakeside Dragonfly (P) Lucy Vitols (G) Moonstruck (P) Peanut (G) Sara's Sensation (P) Spartacus 1&2 (P) Teeny Weeny Bikini (P) Tokudama aureonebulosa (G) Tropical Dancer (G) White Dove (P) Most of those that are minis were in the ground until I moved them into pots in August last summer, and the dang squirrels kept digging them out of the pots. I should have put them all back in the ground, they might had fared better. Oh well. Such is life. If Lakeside Paisley Print and Lakeside Midnight Miss don't come around, they may too be added to the list. Empress Wu hasn't come up either, she had a couple of eyes that looked like they may do something, but now it looks more like she's a goner as well. Karen...See Moredjacob Z5b SE WI
