Move giant Goatsbeard, or move Krossa Regal hosta?
Comments (6)I would love to have a division of the goatsbeard. I am not good at dividing plants normally (except daylilies), I always feel like IâÂÂm mutilating them: but if itâÂÂs out of the ground anyway, IâÂÂll look and see if there is enough there to divide in half. I wanted one on the opposite side of the (symmetrical, more or less) bed anyway. I think since IâÂÂd like another, that tips the scale in favor of moving the goatsbeard. Troves of trilliumsâ¦.I assume you did not have to cut back the leaves, since you moved it in spring? IâÂÂm just not sure how IâÂÂd move it in the fall if I kept all the stems intact. When I want to move some tall plants, like asters, I just chop them off halfway. They never miss a beat. But I donâÂÂt know enough about goatsbeard. IâÂÂd say IâÂÂll wait til next spring, but this last spring I DID plan to move it, and the season got away from me and soon it was too big. Yes, I used KenâÂÂs hosta moving tips a few years ago! I was having a front patio installed in late July. It was a very hot July, too. My husband thought it looked like too much trouble to do. But the patio installation guys were definitely taking notes. They were moved to a holding bed, then moved back to the front yard again a month later. They took the move well....See MoreOT- Looking for giant Elephant Ears and assorted Hosta for trade!
Comments (29)Loretta, I have 4 siam ruby reds, that I left outside thruout the winter. I covered them in February when we had the 2 weeks of freezing weather. I covered them with a sheet and bungie cord, with 4 inches of mulch. All 4 made it thru the freezes. The one that I planted on the South side of the house, did not even freeze back, it is doing great, its about 4ft tall, and has pups. The 2 I planted on the East side, did not freeze back to the ground, but did have to be cut back, they are about 2 ft tall right now, no pups. The one I planted on the North side froze back to the ground, it is slowly coming back. I did not know where to plant them, so I planted them on diffrent sides, the one on the south side, seemed to multiply much faster then the other 3. I have a sprinkler system, so they were watered every other day, even when it froze. This is zone 9b coastal, Rockport Texas. I hope this information helps you. Comments (19)At risk of appearing arguementive, I have stood in the shade of a very mature Sagae ready for shipping at a growers field. It was root-balled like a tree, and granted the root ball was 3' diameter, the top of the plant was WELL over my head and I am 6'3"+. I was so impressed I bought a young-un which is now in it's 3rd year and measured 15"h x 42"w during a drought. Sagae Blue Angel (mine is still a kid at 21"tall x 51" ) Earth Angel (mine is a baby from Hallson last fall) Regal Splendor (mine is only in 3rd year but starting to stand tall-and gorgeous) Empress Wu (just bought a baby two weeks ago) Krossa Regal (mine is still a kid too! In human age terms not yet legal to buy beer in Illinois) Parhelion: She, KR, and RS will be standing in line for their 1st beer together - but Parhelion is already 24" x 51" Sum & Substance (Mine is mature at 28" x 55") Liberty (Will it get tall enough? Mine is in 2nd spring) If I think of another I will go out and get it (LOL). That is how my list of "Must Have" is defined. I know what variegation I want but haven't pinned down a specific hosta. Just a comment on my hostas heights. Last year I entered a drought in July and no matter how much I could afford to water, they ALL lost 4"-6" in height from earlier measurements due to sagging petiole. This year I am already in my second month of drought. In May and June combined I have had less than 2 1/2" of rain TOTAL. Can I anticipate my hostas would measure taller if they had adequate water? Comments (26)Shadow..my Sum and Substances have large leaves but overall they aren't as large as BA..it's good to know that Empress Wu is slow for others too..maybe this is our year!.. peren..your Blue Angel is bigger than a lot of bathrooms!!..before I moved BA it was 4 to 5 ft..it's a littIe smaller since the move..I should measure it this year..I think it should be bigger this year.....See MoreBeth - Michigan 6A
