Is this Arizona Cypress dead?

This Arizona Cypress / Carolina Sapphire has been planted a couple years and has been doing ok in my z7a part shade heavy clay.

Several weeks ago we had a period of about 48 hours where temperatures were between 0 and 9 degrees F.

This tree, along with many mature cypress, arborvitae, and even Holly’s in the community almost immediately turned brown.

Is it dead or is this just winter damage?

It still has a couple limbs with blue edges but the vast majority is very brown.

Can’t see much in that pic. Life is in the buds so at this point all you can do is wait and see if it buds out.

I wouldn't expect an evergreen cypress family conifer with this much browning to come back very well.

If half dead not worth bothering planting. The condition of nursery stock before planting is critical to results obtained after planting. And you don't want to infest the planting site with a root-rotting water mold or other pathogen that might be present, causing the browning out. Cypress plants are often root-bound because they are fast-growing. Nursery stock in my market can be pretty much counted on to have deformed roots on an across-the-board level - even famous multimillion dollar growing operations apparently pay no attention to preventing this bothersome problem. When an item is in addition fast-growing, so much the worse.

Can Arizona Cypress be container grown?

My experience with this conifer is it tends to have a wide girth. Growing in a pot...I don't know. Shearing to keep it in proportion with the container would eventually become necessary. This is a big conifer if allowed to free range. I realize grown in a pot would dwarf its size but how much? Another thought...dug up in the middle of Summer...maybe a 50% chance of survival depending on the size of the root ball and after care. Personally I would choose a better cultivar for container presentation and one grown in a pot for resale. Dave

Conifers are pruned all the time, for all sorts of reasons (bonsai being the most extreme). Check out some of Adrian Bloom's writing. Better yet, find an ACS member near you. We just held our annual meeting in Newark, and the Central Region has many, many members near you! Many people in the Society know how to prune and could give you some guidance and ideas (and we have really stepped up our demos of aesthetic pruning of late.) American Conifer Society (Oh and I think that you have a 'Sulphured' - congratulations! Pete Powell, it's from Arizona! It barely knows what water is... ;-)

both answers are spot on.. you have nothing to lose waiting and seeing what happens when and if it buds out ...

and since its not the prime focal point at your front door.. why not give it the time...

im surprised at the temps you note.. that arbs had any problem at all ... of course that is a common name. and we arent really sure which in particular they are ...

you are either type A or type B... if A.. destroy it now.. as its imperative you fix it immediately ... if type B.. waiting until may.. to see how it reacts.. isnt that big a deal...

ive had a mutitude of trees and conifers be denuded for many reasons... [including mid summer hail storms.. so its not all cold issues ].... most otherwise healthy plants can and will releaf ... this particular plant did not last long in my MI.. and i presumed to was because the evergreen leaves were freeze dried in winter winds... while its roots were useless in frozen ground.. you surely didnt come anywhere near that type of event ....

embo does hit on the suggestion.. that even if it does survive.. .it might be rather ugly for a few years.. while it recovers ....

I have no problem waiting to see, was just curious.

I was very surprised at how many evergreen trees/plants had cold damage, considering that it wasn’t THAT cold and not even for very long.

Cedars are a good indicator of cold in z6. Blue Atlas cedar I drive by usually looks fine in late winters, but the way-below cold/wind around Christmas certainly browned/dulled much of the outer-most needles.
