Help design my flowerbed - pics
Comments (5)Thank you for the responses. Holley, you have some great questions which I'll answer below. I totally agree that the evergreens overpower. I'm adding a new picture in this post so you can see the whole front of the house. The flower bed that I mentioned above, and the one to the left of the porch where all planted when we moved in. I've already taken up some of the bushes (hence the reason for the bare spot to the far left). The bushes that were already planted when we bought grow like crazy. I planted the 5 small evergreen shrubs going across the porch. I like these because they really don't grow much and have been easy to keep up. To answer the questions above: 1) I'm not sure what plants I'm wanting. I like color. I'd love to pull up all the bushes that were already planted and redo the bed with the flag pole and the one to the far left with some color and then keep the 5 small green shrubs as a balance in the middle. I like grasses as a border. Something that attracts butterflies or hummingbirds would be good too as we have a lot of both. I guess it goes back to the "overpowering" comments above. We have this fairly large flower bed, but it's totally bland because there's just some big green bushes. 2) I love being outside, so yea I guess I'm a gardener. My problem is just not knowing plants and being able to envision what beds will look like when everything comes together and especially what things will look like in a couple years when things start to grow. 3) Talked about this one. 4) I would like to keep the flag pole. My best friend is currently in Afghanistan, so I'd like to keep it up. Thanks again for the comments thus far!!! Comments (6)Since I don't know what conditions your grape is growing in, I would recommend the following: Full sun, water, fertilizer, and good air circulation. I don't know what to fertilize grapes with, but I would think that you would want less nitrogen than phosphorus and potassium, fert. bags are have three numbers: N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), look for a lower first number. I would recommend using an organic fertilizer as well, because you are less likely to burn the plant if you overdo it. I think the flower size looks fine. Have the grapes been unusually small in the previous years?...See MoreMy big decorating dilemma: help decide what to do? Lots of pics
Comments (37)Not sure I explained myself well, based on your response. I am notsuggesting wrapping the brick wall in wood, and the wood i am suggesting would match your cabinets. I am suggesting a panel of cherry that runs in a vertical line the width of the fireplace (after covering the brick surround and one brick width wider all around that in a dark granite). The rest of the wall would remain brick. The wood panel would cover the arched niche (once you knocked off the lip). You could easily add a mantel then, perhaps in the same wood or even a rectangular box of stainless steel) on top of the wood panel. The ledge may be at eye level, but that in now way precludes you from leaning a piece of art on it. Check out how art is hung in galleries and in collections in homes, and not all of is (or can be if in a grouping)at eye level. I wish I could photoshop this to better illustrate my thoughts....See MoreFollow-up to problem...now solved! Pics...
Comments (13)Very nice! I am definitely NOT an expert on styling/styles etc. I just do what I like and most of the time it turns out pleasing to others as well... just a thought - what would those wall lights look like if when you hardwired them in, they were upside down? I don't know if it changes the modern asthetic or not... the question just popped into my head -- plus it might give you more task lighting. as I said, I really don't know ... and it looks good already... but the idea crossed my mind and you haven't permanently hung the lights yet... Good luck!...See MoreRelated Professionals
