I would try the following before making any decisions…remove the two upholstered chairs at the window end of the room…maybe to the den? Move the loveseat to the long window wall and the sofa flat against the smaller window wall so they form an L-shaped seating area, with the cocktail table in front of the sofa. Is there an end table available to place in the corner between them? Then remove the matching chairs/recliners? (I hope so because they will fill in the space nicely where they will be situated) near the fireplace for a moment and move that rug away from the fireplace so it abuts the other rug (so it looks like one big area rug…no gap showing). Then place the matching chairs so they are angled slightly in front of the fireplace with enough clearance to recline, but facing the other seating area. (The recliners could even face the fireplace in the winter when it’s being used.) Move the wooden box to the end of the loveseat and the plant to the right of the sofa. The taxidermy would have to find a different home, maybe in the den? Does the boat painting fit above the mantle?
The portrait could then go on a smaller wall appropriate for its size/shape. Two seats will be lost, but the seating arrangement and the flow will be improved. At least you will be able to assess the furniture layout/larger rug using what you have…and if you like it, you may want to keep the rugs and have them bound or taped together.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try to re arrange the furniture as suggested. Yes the two Morris chairs recline and the one brown arm chair. I have a sofa bed in the den.

What are your thought on two or three round rugs in a grayish/tanish/blue color in the living room?

Diana..I would like to repaint but want to go more light colored. Maybe white and airy. I don't want red or orange. I've been there done that and I'm wanting a different look.

Yes...we have a big family and use all the seating.

The living room measurement is 12' X 20'. I isn't wide enough to do two areas it seems. Maybe I need smaller furniture.

I understand if you're not wanting red or orange. But there are other colors in the spectrum that could work--blue, yellow, green....gray is a great background color, but as a monochromatic palette it just falls flat and is a total yawn.

Please show photos after the furniture is moved around. I think the rug dilemma will sort itself out once the furniture layout is improved. If you go with the edited seating, a round rug under the Morris chairs may work well. And a 9 x 11 rug under the larger seating area will work nicely. If you look at the pic of the fireplace in the original post…the stone, wood, greige paint, Morris chairs and the boat painting, and black accents in the sconces fireplace screen all work well together and it’s not boring. Use that as your inspiration to edit/add decor.

I would go with two rugs. Here is I tried 12x15...still small.

OMG…It looks and feels so much better!!! A little tweak…move the rug(s) closer to the wall with the French doors and a bit closer to the fireplace so more of the floor in front of the fireplace is covered by the rug(s), but make sure the far end of the rug(s) stays about 8” behind the front edge of the sofa. That way the fireplace/Morris chairs/rug will be aligned. Center the sofa on the window at the far end. Yes the boat picture looks better on the side wall. Yes relocate the taxidermy and upholstered chair. Great job!

I forgot to say the Morris chairs can then move more directly in front of each side of the fireplace once the rug(s) are pulled over. Oh and the small floor lamp there is redundant with the wall sconce there and try the white flowers in between the chairs.

Oh just noticed there’s not enough room to center the sofa without overlapping the loveseat…disregard.

Suggestions:

1) Remove the vase of flowers by the fireplace. Move the recliner more toward the wall, so there is more separation between the recliners and the fireplace is more visible.

2) Switch the love seat and the sofa. I believe that in doing this, you would be able to then center the love seat under that window. Then, could you center the sofa under the larger window?

3) Put a lamp in the corner between sofa and loveseat. Not a torchiere. You need lighting.

Ill try it should the recliners stay on the rugs?

I have the above rug. It’s beautiful. Great if you are set to have a neutral decor. You could also do a blue background if you wanted to add some color. I like the ones Diana Bier chose above.

As an owner of a log home, please don't paint the logs!

For me, it is so much easier to get tired of white - and you will NEVER be able to restore the warm stained ambiance. And logs really don't look good painted white.

I would go for one large rug and it does not need to come close to the edges of that room. I know that can get pricey, though. If you find rugs without a border, you could push the rugs together and two rugs (in some cases) may be less expensive than one huge one.

Love seat and Sofa look so much better switched! See if you can tweak that loveseat just a touch more to the left to get it perfectly centered under the window. Can you move the sofa back any toward the window?

Can you show a photo of the sofa straight on? I want to see how it is sitting in relationship to the window.

For the rugs, you will have to buy 2 8x10's that together make a 16 x 20. Looks like that is what you have now.

Put them together to look like one rug.

To stage current rugs, please center the rugs on the room, so that there is equal open space ont each side. So, the French door wall and the large window wall should have the same amount of open space.

Same going the other way. These details make the room feel more calm.

If you buy a large square end table for between the loveseat and sofa.....then buy a second rectanglar one for next to the sofa, you can do table lamps. Next to the recliners, with the sconce, I am not seeing a lamp. Only if you remove the sconce.

Typically the rug would be centered between walls but I suggested to shift the rugs closer to the wall with the french doors so rug would align better with the recliners/fire place, so the recliner on the left wouldn be straddling the rug.

The light rug you picked looks great, but this is a small home, I am guessing it will get a lot of traffic. If you need all that seating, you must get lots of guests or have a big family.

Look for a patterned rug with color. It will hide lots of whatever.

A number of the rug sites have a visualizer tool available. The ”see it in your room” feature. Very user friendly. RugsUSA, Rugs.com, RugsDirect.com, Crate&Barrel and there are others who also have this tool. So you can try out various looks in your space.

CDR the reason for the round rug idea is that my room us so long and narrow i cant find a rug thats long enough with out it getting too wide… unless i get a custom rug made

Just my opinion. Not worth the $. Not going to look good. You can get a carpeting shop to bind the edges of any carpeting in whatever size you want.

I had a white rug and while it was easy to clean I was constantly doing so! I got rid of it and replaced with a busier print.
