We've been looking at houses with guest houses/casitas for my mom. We saw an interesting one last weekend. The guest house was a former tool shed that had been converted by the architect owner into a really interesting space. Although it might not be at all what you want, it was an interesting exercise for me in thinking outside of the box. Every room is a pass-through room, with the flow something of a serpentine through the rooms. It has 862 square feet and is based on a grid of 9' squares (sub-optimal, but he was working with the cards he was dealt, it appears). I thought to post it here because it has no true hallways. We would consider making one tweak -- a door from the Office Space into the bedroom, so that the "ante room" or whatever on the way to the bedroom could be its own private bedroom and/or storage area for the main house that is "separate" from the guest house. The spiral stairs go to a sleeping loft over the bath and kitchen area -- large enough for a queen mattress.

Can the safe be moved over by the window on the right side? You want to make the most of the long walls for shelving as in your inspiration photo. Empty walls are always just screaming for shelving in my opinion! A desk that incorporates drawers or shelves and a flat space is always better than a simple table like you've got. Either a couple of filing cabinets or two cubbies that are table height will be a great base for the computer desk. I'd run that along the wall where the desk currently resides-I'm assuming the safe is in that corner out of the photo? Then put shelving up on that wall. You can get inexpensive brackets at the hardware store and they sell wood that you can either paint or stain, or melamine covered shelving in lengths up to 12'. They'll even cut them to size for you! A plain hollow core door would make a great desk top-they're cheap at the the Orange Apron hardware store. I always make sure that anything that needs to be plugged in, like the computer, printer, a lamp are closest to the outlets. My office/craft room is tiny but I have a nice wooden desk with drawers on either side, and a farmhouse type table across from one another. A bookcase on one end and a sewing machine table on the other. On the walls I've hung some cabinets I got at Ikea in the clearance section, on all other walls I've hung shelves to hold baskets, books, scrapbook paper, etc. My room doesn't have a floor to ceiling window but there are two windows which limit where I can put things. I haunt thrift stores for furniture I can paint or repurpose, baskets and containers to store things in. Luckily my town has dozens of them, plus a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and we're within an hours drive of Ikea. I've managed to outfit my office on a tight budget, also utilizing Craigslist too.

I would re-imagine that space. Do you have a home office somewhere else in your home? Now that we're hooked on Zoom meetings, a set up like that might be helpful. If it were me, I wouldn't need so much desk. And definitely the monitor would have to be near the office chair. I'd put my desk facing the big windows so I could look out, and the monitor maybe a bit on the diagonal so it wouldn't obstruct the view. Then, I'd remove all the rest of the cabinets and drawers and use them for garage storage or donate to Habitat or other charity. They still look very nice. If you remove those wall cabinets, you'll have more light in the TV area. That would be a very good thing. I'd put a nice picture on the wall where those cabinet are. If you want to re-do the desk, I would make it more modern and sleek. It's quite heavy-looking for a space near a bright modern window like the one you have.

Some like bright colours for a work environment, I prefer a calmer atmosphere. So here are my suggestions. Possibly you can paint some of the Ikea furniture you already have? or combine with other pieces of the same series? Include some art on the walls. Good lighting is important, pot lights in the room would be good combined with other lighting.
