For Conifers in NorthEast - 7A - Long Island, when looking at conifers grafted on standards.

Any downside to have the -graft- higher relative to either winter or summer temps.

Or the placement of the -exposed union part- doesn't matter but rootstock does, depending on what I am ordering ?

For plant health, I don't think it matters where the scion is placed.

For grafters, it's often easier to graft higher on the trunk of the rootstock, especially when the scions have very short internode distances. But most buyers prefer to buy plants with foliage as close to the ground as possible. So most grafters make an effort to graft close to the ground.

For standards or lollipop conifers, they are almost always top grafted. That is because these are typically dwarf selections that grow slowly and never develop much of a trunk on their own. So the tall straight trunk you see is some other compatible conifer with the dwarf lollipop cultivar attached at the top.

It is very much a personal taste thing but I find them to look very unnatural.

I've had mixed results. Put a 'Redhaven' and a 'Mericrest' in the same hole. They were compatible in vigor, but the Mericrest was unproductive, so I cut it down. I would chalk that one up as a 'win' Better I didn't waste a full hole on Mericrest, and it didn't seem to slow down 'Redhaven' Other hole had 'J.H. Hale' 'Double Jewel' and 'Fantastic Elberta' Double Jewel bore really well once, then stunted out. I cut it down. 'J.H. Hale' appears to be a good tree, but it is too feeble to compete with "Fantastic Elberta" FE finally pulled through for me last season, but I wish J.H. Hale had a prime hole. Shoulda done a little more research about the characteristics of 'Hale' on that one. 'Geo-Pride' Pluot was shared with 'Elephant Heart' plum. EH died immediately. GP bears very lightly in Z5A and it is now shaded too much by some of my other trees. I would put that one as a wash. 'Shiro' was shared with 'Red Ace' Red Ace died immediately. Shiro bears even more lightly than Geo-Pride. But its a pretty tree close to the house. Another wash. 'Polly' on the other hand was given its own hole based on my supposition that it was a prime candidate to be a good producer. It turned out to be true. I guess my conclusion is that shared hole planting has been useful to me to try different varieties in limited space in a marginal climate. So I guess I would recommend it, but pay attention to relative plant vigor, not just any peach with any peach, or any apple with any other apple.

MM.111/EMLA.111 (Malling-Merton 111 and the virus-free East Malling-Long Ashton 111) produce very nice apples similar to Northern Spy from which they're descended (GRIN). MM.106 has a reputation for producing nice apples (GRIN), so much so, that many English gardeners (where MM106 is more common) grow it out rather than use it as a rootstock. M.7 is also from the folks at East Malling, and was bred out about 100 years ago. No idea if it's a good eater, but it sure is pretty.

Hi, Scott, et al, In a different forum/thread, I posted the same question: i.e. do 4 saplings growing close form a single trunk of a solid single core or multiple cores, and 'Brandon6b' replied that, if this did happen, the core/tree-formed may rot. I hope this isn't the case: my reply..... That is very disappointing: that the rot will occur and sometimes will be the cause of premature tree death. In nature, I've seen enormous threes that seem to survive this natural arrangement, or maybe I'm not interpreting the observation correctly: there are 4+ large trunks that are growing so closely that, for the first few feet, the run in parallel contact with one another; maybe they are not 4 separate trees (of the same species and size) but 4 separate suckers coming from the same root system. Maybe a way out of this issue is to get this to happen early on: to arrange the 4 saplings (that are of 1" diameters or so) only 2" apart from each other; to me, it would seem that this would have to cause a single solid tree trunk of the 4. I hope I can figure this out soon, because the saplings are on their way in the mail and are bare root. Thanks, Steve

I'm with The Fruitnut - I've got mine in rows 20 ft apart, with 20 ft spacings in the row, but think I'll come back and stick another tree in between - I believe 10-ft spacings in the row is probably OK - 8 might be even better if I was starting from scratch.

I'm thinking about trying a IceBreaker in a container. Thinking standard -shorter 9-12" trunk just to stick the head of the pot a smidge. I think the head being perched a smidge higher in a container looks better. The container is about 22-23" high.

Figure since the conifer will be about 4" lower than the edge of the container, the standard will just elevate the head out of the pot a bit nicer

The hard work is finding a standard head on Firma. The only one I have found on standard is on balsamea

why dont you fill the pots another 2 or 3 inches.. whats the advantage to 4 inches?

I always like to keep a smidge of room in containers. Keeps the potting medium in there, instead of just spilling out.
