Considering two Fisher & Paykel refrigerators side by side

I really want a huge fridge for my new kitchen - we have room for a 64" refrigerator. I have no experience with Fisher Paykel. I really just want something reliable - especially since I know most refrigerators are designed to last 5 years these days. I also don't want to spend much more that $5000. If F&P isn't that great - will probably just go with a 36" standard counter depth fridge.

We bought two F&P refrigerators but have only had them for four years. No problems so far, and the interiors are a breeze to keep clean.

Never had an 'unreliable' refrigerator. Are you saying this brand is guaranteed to last longer than other, because the service plan options says something different. Have you looked into sub-zero models? They are usually larger.

That is not enough space in my opinion to open the drawers. I love my fridge but think you need to be careful with this. I walked down stairs and checked and I would need more than 5" to make the drawers work.

The topload dryer models cannot be modified for side-venting through the cabinet. You'd have to do it with elbows, assuming there's room at the rear and side. It can run with a fairly long vent system, but there is a limit on length and number of turns. Check the installation guide available via online download for details. With a 4" outlet hood, three 90Â° bends allows a maximum of 35 feet rigid duct for proper performance. You might consider the GE Harmony dryer. If I recall, it has a separate blower motor to allow for very long venting. And possibly investigate the Kenmore Oasis, Whirlpool Cabrio, and Maytag Bravos. Whirlpool did at one time have a special "long-vent" option for some models that used a higher-speed belt drive attachment for the blower. In regards to the Calypso, yes they can be problematical, but are very good machines otherwise. I have two, about six years old, bought used. One needed a motor board but has never had any mechanical repairs far as I can tell, it still has the original u-joint. The other, I replaced the u-joint and basket and it needed a lot of clean-up from misuse by the previous owner, but is working fine now.

Well, obviously I don't have this one, but here's what I remember from looking at it (all to be taken w/ grain of salt since this is based purely on memory!)---not sure there is anyone floating around GW that I've heard of who has the FD model! 2. Is it necessary for you to open the doors past 90 degrees in order to roll out the crisper bins (if so, how far)? Or do the crisper bins help push open the doors? Probably. It is with the single-door model and I'm 99% sure they're the same crisper bins, so I imagine it's true for this too. However, you can get into the single-door bins with a 90 degree opening---you just can't take them out. 5. Do you have to open/close the doors in a certain order? (eg, always close the left hand side before the right or it won't seal, etc.) I think this is one of the fridges that you can do either way (where the center flap folds), but might be misremembering that. If I think of it I'll check the next time I'm at a showroom. 6. Can you fit two half-gallon cartons of milk on ONE of the bottom door shelves? Pretty sure you can but did not test it. Gallon containers fit. 7. Where do you put a carton of eggs? While the FD doesn't come with the same little egg holder that the single-door has, I think the upper door bins are the same size, so probably eggs would fit there? That's what I imagined when I looked at it, at least. 8. How hard is it to pull open the freezer? (With some other models, I have to literally brace myself.) Average, I think, given that I don't remember it being an issue one way or the other (as I do with some of the other FD fridges we looked at). It seemed more substantial than the freezer door o the single-door model. 9. When you pull open the freezer, does the top shelf slide out automatically, or if not is it easy to slide yourself? Just the main shelf comes out---you have to reach in and open the ice area and other shelf separately. Don't know if you can lock them on or off as you can with some fridges, but I don't recall seeing that feature. Not sure how much that helps...good luck!

We can easily pull our refrigerator out, especially having left 1/2 inch on either side but I imagine this would be doable with ccirou3’s approach as well. We were actually going to do exactly what ccirou did but then, once it was installed, we were ok not adding the fillers/ shim facades on the sides. We only added one to the top. I would recommend adding one on top that is high enough that if you want to switch fridges later on, you can remove it and have enough cabinet height. Also, to be sure, we do not have the integrated model, just the standard refrigerator. I think the shim/filler idea is great because it can be done on the spot by the contractor (as long as you ordered the fillers) and is a flexible solution.

No F&P experience, just exploring the brand myself. But I would steer clear of Northland. I have their 36" all-ref and all freezer, would NOT recommend them. I saved money, but they are VERY noisy, the seals don't work well so I have condensation and mold near the doors, and I've had to repair the freezer once and the refrigerator twice in the past 10 years, with LOTS of food that went bad. Also hard to find repair people because they're technically commercial models.

What I've read is that most refrigerators are about the same reliability, namely reliable but not quite rock solid, but that some brands are much less reliable.

I love F&P's options, though not quite as numerous as Sub-Zero, and I like their completely flush doors, at hopefully a substantial savings over Sub-Zero. I've settled on their 4 gas, 4 induction zone range, so I'm tempted by their $2000 rebate.

I've specified F&P dishwashers in the past and they are a terrific brand. They are expanding their line into refrigeration and ranges and are priced well. I think the F&P fridges would be a good choice for the money. That said, if they have a service contract you can purchase, I would do so. Not every appliance repair outfit services them.

WellI have Fridgeadaire sxs all fridge / all freezer the commercial line they are 16 yrs old still going strong not one issue temps stay really well . They are 62" with both SXS and the built in trim kit. You could do the Elecrolux ones I have a few clients who have those still going strong. They are abit prettier inside than mine. About the same width and a nice looking built in kit.

Without knowing the size of your kitchen… or the floor plan…I would suggest that two separate refrigerators may be more advantageous .. for easier access and for different purposes…if someone is cooking.. others want to make a salad or get drinks.. it could be a traffic jam all in one spot..
