It's billed as a bedroom--it has it's own bathroom and a closet. Maybe the rules for an industrial style condo are different.

Here too a bedroom without a way out other than the door is not able to be sold as a bedroom. My niece wanted us to move to Minneapolis and on a quick trip we toured assisted living places. One did have a bedroom with only one door and no window which I thought was really strange and not safe. With the kitchen immediately to the right of the bedroom I thought was even stranger except later it was mentioned only three of the stoves in the multistory building were connected. If I had not toured other places in this area looking for a place for my husband the oddities of the place would never have been noticed.

Edited to add that most frequently those rooms are sold as "bonus rooms" and the owner can used them for whatever they want.

I could not. I'm only very mildly claustrophobic, but as the years go by, both DH and I both prefer not to sleep in a room without operational windows, can't imagine no windows at all. We love a cozy comforter but a cool even chilly breeze across our faces. We would sometimes stay in an acceptable but not-as-luxe hotel located closest to my mothers living facility as we discovered the really 'plush' one that was something of a treat otherwise - had windows that could not be opened.

I doubt fire codes allow it to be a bedroom. Did they close up a window?

Here it HAS to have a window to be billed as a bedroom. Having said that...I wouldn't like it as a bedroom In the Summer especially, I want a breeze, some outdoor sounds as well.

The reason for it not legally being a bedroom most places and why we shouldn't ignore all that is that it isnt safe in a fire. They can call it what they like but I still would not want to use it as a bedroom. Every State, county and city has its codes but that is one I would not feel comfortable ignoring.

Since all the bedrooms in my house have at least three windows the answer is no. I can't imagine one without windows and I don't think it would be legal around here.

It looks like not all the "walls" in this place go floor to ceiling and that second "bedroom" has low walls and is open on top. So maybe it benefits from what appears to be a window or door at the end of the hall.

To me, that's a one bedroom apartment with a library/den/study. The bathroom at the bottom of the image does not "go" with bedroom #2 - it's not ensuite and is for "public" use, as the other one is inside the master suite.

Odd layout, I wouldn't go for it myself.

Not much of anything about that floorplan makes sense. I wonder if the so called Bedroom 2 was once part of the kitchen. Only 2 windows and a slider to the balcony, all at one end of the footprint. Makes no sense. Are the sidewalls shared with other units? It would be like living in a cave. Which way does it face? Morning sun? Setting sun?

I'd skip this condo entirely....

I don't mind the overall layout, but I'd keep the master as a bedroom. I'd expand the kitchen into the den, but that might not be possible.

There are reasons and uses for a room without windows (my SIL is searching for one now), but a bedroom isn't one of them. At least in my opinion. I know safety seems like a stupid reason when that bedroom is in a condo and 12 stories above ground, but I still think you need natural light for when you wake up. YMMV.

Elmer is correct about the walls - they don't go all the way to the ceiling, so the 2nd bedroom is technically in compliance with fire codes. However, you then have the issue of noise and light - and cooking odors - filtering in from the other rooms.

These false walls are common in NYC apts when you need to squeeze in another roommate, but I wouldn't want such an arrangement when it's not necessary.

I remember those days Bookwoman. The tiny hole in the wall I lived in only had 1 window, in the bedroom. They put a wall up that stopped short of the ceiling by about a foot, and called it a "junior" 1 bedroom because it gave you a (very dark!) 7x9 living room. Good times. 😆

It feels weird to me to use a room with no windows, like I am in a walk in closet. I would not like this floor plan. I put up with it in my younger days because I did not have many options but I wouldn't voluntarily do it again.

are two exits out of the bedroom? Then I would think it is legal as long as you can exit two different ways. Am I correct?

I'd pass on this cave. Are there any corner units available with at least two exposures, and *favorable* exposures?

Our Maui condo was the typical 'shoebox', where condos are built to give ocean views to the maximum number of units, but it was wider than many -- more 'bootbox' -- with sliding glass window walls out to patios at each end of the 'box'. Bathrooms and closets were interior.

That would be a storage closet where I live. It legally cannot be a bedroom without a window AKA: escape route in case of fire....

Some newer apartments in my area include a bedroom not on an outside wall, by giving it a wide opening and a barn door. Our niece is in such a condo in another city: the bedroom has kind of frosted glass walls and a door to the living space on one side and to the bathroom on the other. Fine for a single person.

Also, there are no windows in the kitchen or bathroom. For me, those are big negatives. And while the sliding glass door may let in lots of light, the "view" would be of the balcony.

I can do without a bathroom or kitchen window: many condo apartments don't have either. But windows to the bedroom and living room are a must.
