type and brand of course sand

does anyone use quikrete all purpose sand for their garden and containers? trying to decide if it would be adequate for both?

To what purpose are you deciding to include sand? Even very coarse sand is not a recommended ingredient for a container soil mix.

wet sand becomes cement.. and that is why it is RARELY used on pots ...

media is a water management system allowing free flow of water from the top.. right out the bottom.. retaining only that which is nee4ded for the given plant ... sand is not in that equation at all ... [unless i suppose you are dealing with cacti.. but one would think you would have mentioned that if you were ..]

large particles increase drainage.. peat is the sponge that retains the water ... again.. sand doesnt do anything but make heavy pots ...

all that said.. go buy a package of kids play sand.. if you insist on trying sand ...

i did know a guy who insisted in chicken grit.. his one gallon pots weighed about 10 pounds.. lol.. but boy did he perfect HIS system .. i frankly dont know how he moved his pots around.. surprised he didnt blow a few spinal discs ... my point being.. he made his system work ... so if you ant to mess with sand... go for it ...

try any variation on Als gritty mix.. and you will NEVER fail ... im pretty sure there is no sand in it ... he will be along with the recipe soon enough ...

There is a chance that the garden department will have horticultural sand, otherwise you will need to look for the sand they use to make concrete or for paving, aka builders sand. Just don't get it premixed with concrete! Common brands are Sakrete and Quickrete. It's been awhile since I have had to buy any but I think they might call it "all-purpose" sand. I recall there is a warning on the bag about the risk of inhaling silica dust. Be careful about breathing in the dust when it is dry as it can cause a lung condition with prolonged exposure. I prefer to get it wet as it comes out of the bag for this reason, and do it outside.

course sand is what you use, i don't know what's in the tubes, i'm thinking of using it for propagating it myself, it's very course and has tiny pieces of gravel, that's exactly what i need. what you don't want is the fine sand they use to fill in flagstone walkways, that stuff gets hard when it's wet. but your local nursery can look at a cup of it and tell you. I looked at it and it looked gravely. I'll likely ask first, but i just got a bunch of those tubes just for the sand for propagating.

at lowes they have cleaner made by olyumpic..itbsays it does not kill plants,in fact i used it to brightning my deck,worked good..its called OXY-DECK.. I AM GOING TO USE IT ON MY VINYL SIDING BECAUSE I OVER SPRAYED IT WHILE CLEANING MY DECK, OH BOY DID IT TAKE THE FILM OFF HOUSE.. sorry for caps..its worked great..

Man,that was close,I had my thumb on the flint. Where is Don when we need him?? he is a guy that comes over here every so often that lives in S America,anyway inside floor finish 101, controled inviroment, install the T&G material sand it flat and smooth, some of the sawdust will get in the small space between the flooring the old Carpenters wanted this but latley they have vack systems hooked up,anyway the idea is to have a seamless look, clean up all the dust put on a few coats of urethane inbetween light sanding,allow plenty of time for each coat to dry in a dust free area.Outside finish 101,non controled inviroment, temp change sun,rain,hail,snow things like that. It dosent matter if the project has a roof over it its still outside exposed to weather changes,rain,cold,hot, sun this works on the finish up and down and will shatter a urethane finish,like breaking glass only on your deck the chards will be glued to your deck and will be all but impossible to get off.The finish has to move with the weather. So how do they do it in S America??? thats why I was hopeing Don was around,anyway I am thinking they do it with a hand rubbed finish,that is they are building coats with a product that sticks to the wood and to itself over time they build a finish that will hold up,actually bonding it to the wood like burnished leather,burning it in with a lot of labor. And of course its not a one time thing,them Boys are working it every now and then so you Folks will come back and have a drink with them again. Then there is the drainage thing,water is going to get thru that floor,it dosent matter how little that might be,it has no place to go so it finds a home in the ipe, the ipe being its own freindly self,swells up to make room for more and KaBongo your floor is buckled. Its not the ipe guys fault he was just being freindly,its your fault for not providing drainage and cloging what drain there was with sawdust and urethane. So how would you do it?? The sand will have to be quite coarse. Nothing below 1/10" particle size. But you will have to also make sure that you do not use potting or garden soil with it. Otherwise it will defeat the purpose having coarse soil. Al's gritty mix contains granite grit which is equivalent to very coarse sand. Granite grit is easier to find. Chicken/Turkey feed stores will properly sized and sifted bags of poultry grit.

What ToC said above, plus, you don't say where you live, so I can't guess what might be available. Coarse sand for horticultural applications should be coarser than builders or torpedo sand, terms that have different meanings that vary with your geography. Gran-I-Grit makes a starter size poultry grit and New Ulm Industries packages #1 size Cherrystone for the same purpose. Manna Pro packages a chick grit that will work, too. Notice: I now see they have added "pro biotics" to their products. I have no idea what that means insofar as making their products more or less appropriate for use in grow media, so you should find that out before using the Manna Pro products.

Fine sand, like play sand will take you in a direction opposite of where your most productive media will be in terms of drainage and aeration To give you an idea, these are the 2 basic media I grow in:

Either/both are very productive due to the fact they hold so little excess (perched) water and they are able to retain their physical structure for long periods of time.
