When do you fertilize the bulb bed

There have been times where I've dug up bulbs and they were smaller than when I bought them.

I presume the growers have -juiced- them up for nice big fat bulbs in ideal growing conditions, etc.

So when putting down some organics fertz, what is the timing of.

Late fall when roots are starting to being. So that the organics (may slowly work it's way).

Is there such a thing as water runoff, with the heavy spring rains.

Or do you put down fertz, around the time when blooms are up, hopefully also when some of the heavier rainfall is done, so that the fertz is there for the next 2 months or so before the leaves brown out.

I don't fertilise bulbs at all and I don't grow them in a dedicated bed. A bulbs only bed sounds very boring to me. Mine are mixed in perennial beds and the whole lot gets get a dose of compost whenever I empty the bin. Otherwise they are left to themselves.

I don't. Even if the soil I repot a plant in doesn't say it has food in it, I still don't feed it to give the plant time to settle in and use up the nutrients that are already in the soil.

When do you fertilize your orchard?

Usually you mix soil from several locations in the orchard, sometimes doing seperate soil and subsoil samples although for a home orchard just the soil sample should be enough. pH amendments (either lime or sulfur) are best applied in late fall. Nitrogen can be applied in late sept. to mid-oct. and you might as well include anything else at this time (P, K, boron, whatever). You can also apply it in early spring, which is what Cornell recommends. The advantage of the fall aplication is getting the N into the buds so it's there as they open in the spring, otherwise it takes longer for the tree to pull it up. Also, sometimes the soil is excessively cool and wet in spring for proper uptake. This is why urea is often included in first bud-break spray.

Seriously, I made an unusual effort this year and fertilized them all once in the spring, though I didn't notice any particular difference from last year. Every year I pull out the liquid fertilizer and swear I'm going to top up at least the wimpy roses later in the spring and summer with a weak solution, and every year the bottles get rained on and that's about it. At least by fall I have the excuse not to bother. I agree in principle with not fertilizing in the last 6-8 weeks before the first hard frost, but I've hardly put that to the test even remotely any year. By Halloween however I'll probably go put away those extra bags of fertilizer and Ironite that have been sitting on my front porch since April. I think that counts as fertilizer work, right? Cynthia

That's a bit of a pity Jeb because i would have liked to read (and see) your post.

OP, what sort of bulbs are you talking about? Tulip bulbs, for instance, will 'get smaller' after flowering. What they are really doing is breaking up because the plump, mature bulbs that you bought were at a stage of reproducing after they had flowered.

Those smaller bulbs (if they don't rot during their summer resting period) will grow larger each year until they reach flowering size.

It's about 400+ daffidols flanking the driveway. The -bed- in question is also the same bed where annuals go yearly. Drains well but this area does get irrigation in the summertime. Blooms are fine...just when I dug them up 2 years ago to reseat them a bit, they were just noticably smaller than from *grower bulb ordered to be planted*
