Saucer Sled Fairy Garden - Trying Moss
Comments (13)Hi all! Happy first day of Spring - especially for we northerners!!! Record snowfalls, record days below zero, that's what we had here in CT. I'm anxious about my saucer garden, but still optimistic. I took the last pix yesterday - the last day of winter. I can't yet get any closer than that pix shows but from what I can see, it's only the Blue Star Creeper that looks iffy to me. The three pix below are from Jan 21, Feb 14, and Mar 19, 2014. I still have a frozen stream along the path. In anticipation of success for this saucer experiment, let me add a few notes and tips that I forgot to include above. On my second try I used a lot of local dirt over the base of potting soil. Seems happier - potting soil not earthy enough? This sled is made of aluminum. I don't know about plastic - might its chemicals leach into the dirt over time? Maybe a year or two would be okay? I don't know - anybody else? Since last summer I water (drizzle) with rain water only, and only when needed, concentrating on the drier perimeter, letting it soak to the center. All that said, I'll probably finish this thread with one more pix in early summer - with critters. As for the rest of my time in here - I'm still learning from everyone else - with very little expertise. Onward and upward for us all - flowers included! -- K...See MoreBride bouquet of wildflowers
Comments (1)That sounds like fun! I looked up a site I liked (linked below) and found a few possibilities for flowers that she might be able to find blooming at the right time. Turtlehead is an elegant flower and would look great in a more compact bouquet or with other flowers or ivy trailing. Queen Anns lace grows everywhere if she likes it and can keep it looking good after picking- try it. I think milkweed flowers would look good. She may want to try to find different species that are starrier than the common one. There is a native azalea that blooms in August. Maybe you can find some as that would be beautiful. Meadow rue is very pretty and airy. Meadowsweet? Common white yarrow may look great en masse. Not sure about the smell for a wedding. Many asters will be starting to bloom. Boneset is white with small airy flowers (look out for bees) and blooms for a long time. She can either use a mass of one flower or try to combine them into something more elaborate. She's probably pretty busy, though. It might depend on what you can locate and test out for durability before the wedding. Good luck! Comments (8)Steve, You know that I lived in Alpine for 7 years. My garden was the best ever there and corn grew beyond with huge ears and sweetness. In CO I have yet to grow a garden comparible. The soil here is not the same, very few rocks unless in the mt. forest. In UT the ground seemed to breed rocks in the spring. Tilling was combined with throwing rocks into piles. Your area is close to the mountains and most of the homes were built without grading huge areas of earth. Sometimes I think the problem with most of our soil is due to the building process. They remove so much earth that we are left with nothing else to do but add plus feet of amendments. Getting back what once was takes years. Of course this wouldn't be the case for those that live rural. Willows: I rooted 5 small curly limbs in water this spring that came off from the wind. They rooted in a week and I planted at that time. Doing really well and have grown double their size....See MoreBride’s Dream blooms
Comments (6)Beautiful bloom, I liked Brides Dream very much when I grew it years ago. I’ve thought about either growing it or Royal Highness again. I’d only attempt Royal Highness because our sprays are so much more effective, that rose attracts every form of pestilence....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
