Portico redesign

Hi, I need design advice for my front entry please. The portico is falling down and I’m rebuilding. I‘d like something more modern. Same footprint? Larger front porch? I like a flat roof. Suggestions welcome.

If that is falling down you have some major issues with the roof so get someone out to see what the exact issue is. Then come back for help with how it looks .

We are doing a large renovation on the house, including new roof, so that will be taken care of. I would love suggestions on the design though.

I agree with the direction you're going, frida. My house is small and basically the same shape, but I have siding. I've pinned those same images for my own pergola plans. We're mid-project having poured footings last fall. We'll finish up this summer. We removed our concrete and brick stoop and will have an 8 foot deep front porch that extends to the right almost all the way to the corner. My window to the right of my front door is my kitchen. I absolutely loved the idea of extending the roof all the way to the right. That will fill the void there and make a big difference. My windows are vinyl-clad Andersen windows from 2004. They are in excellent shape. I don't know how well they can take paint. They are grey. Hence the rest of the grey on the exterior. I can't justify replacing them either. They're also inset windows which mean there is little wood being exposed on the exterior. I will change the dark color screens to brighten it up a little bit. Another issue is the roof. Because I have solar up on the roof, it is a bit tricky to change it to tiles. Plus, I have to make sure that the house tolerates the tile roof. it sits on a raised foundation on a small canyon. Although the foundation is rebuilt and very solid now, I am not sure if it can tolerate the additional weight of a tiled roof. The stairs will be tiled with traditional decorative tiles we see commonly in our neighborhood. I guess I have to now find the color palette that goes with the grey window frames. This style house (Tudor revival) typically does not have a front porch. You see them with inset doors with cute little oddly shaped windows in the entry, but if you see them with a porch, its because someone added one later. I agree that enlarging the patio would give you more seating area. Does it have a back or side porch or hardscaping? You may want to concentrate on that as a seating area. Many of my clients lament not having a front porch so they move heaven and earth to put one in, only to realize they rarely use it in favor of the gathering places at the back of the house. They don't like the lack of privacy. One lovely lady said she didn't want to have to put on her makeup "just to see the annoying neighbors I don't want to look at anyway" and had us redesign her entrance to add more plantings and privacy hedges around her porch. Need re-design help for funky exterior

After seeing the "wings" being removed, it sparked an idea. I do NOT have good sketch skills but this is the basic idea. We live in a lake community and several homes have these features. The added beams will be cedar, re-do the siding on the jutout part but will remain vertical, add large flower boxes to each window, the portions behind the beams all the way down to ground level will be stone. No shutters, Replace the large window with a smaller window and make entry door larger with a sidelight on the right side. No room inside the entry to do double sidelight windows. Opinions?

Just signing on to comment that completely flat roofs are almost always a bad idea - water MUST get away from the roof asap. If it doesn’t, it leads to roof failure.

Roofs must have at least a bit of pitch.

Perhaps you can post the current plan for the renovation, or just continue the discussions in one thread instead of three. Any project evolves, even before it starts, so it would be helpful to be able to follow along and know when things change, in order for the wise people here to offer suggestions.

If you're re-roofing, I'd consider having the roof on the right side of the photo continue over the front entry instead of having that weird overlap it currently has. Then get heftier posts, if you need them.

Most importantly you need to post a picture of the whole house…from the street , perhaps… just add it into the discussion… also be clear about what you are doing with the roofline
