Comments (20)I have now learned why leaving the upper three petals is best - it helps the stigma and ovary from drying out too quickly. If you have cool growing conditions, this is probably not an issue. For me, my Haworthia are under lights and if the flower is close to the lights, the petals provide additional protection. A fan set on low can also help. I'm still learning, but here is my current pollinating setup. The terra cotta pot is to bring the flower to an easier working level. The parchment paper is used to lay down removed anthers/pollen. They don't stick and are easy to pick back up. Coloured thread was used to identify what crosses I did. I made a simple knot, slipped them gently over the flower, and tightened them barely enough to stay in place. Right now I am using three pairs of tweezers: large flat pair to hold the receptacle/inflorescence and two small pairs for manipulating the anthers and readjusting their position to make pollinating the stigma easier. With practice, this is all getting much easier!...See MoreLooking for advice caring for Haworthia (Sydney, Australia)
Comments (4)No problem. I'm hesitant to tell you to water more because I'm not sure what your climate is like over there, hence me telling you to wait a bit before watering. I have a extremely thirsty one that I'm currently taking care of, and I water that one profusely, like every 1-3 days and it's finally perking up. But for my more established ones, I go for probably around 2 weeks before I give em a good drink. You can seach for "haworthians" in the search bar. You'll find several really long threads on haworthia. :) Might be some useful info in them. If anything, you can stare at all the lovely haworthia pics!...See MoreHaworthians Page 6
Comments (273)Here is a pup from what I believe is a H. retusa 'Mutica'. It was completely brown when it was on the outskirts of a grow light in my basement. I brought it upstairs and put it next to a window. It's now partly back to green. I thought the pattern was interesting. The bottom part isn't in shadow, it really is brown. (I'm referring to the leaf facing the camera.) It almost looks like one of those chocolate Haworthias or even the H. 'Violet' above. I wonder if keeping it in just the right amount of light would keep it this way. Probably impossible, plus I like this one green, but it might be interesting to try....See MoreBeginner question about bare root plants, can they be saved?
Comments (55)3 plants that seem to be growing inflorescence have better color in newest leaves too - so they could be recovering well. Fungus gnats like moist soil, that has some organic material in it. I mentioned before that plants you showed in post about air roots looked like they are too wet. Keeping top dryer by using some grit helps, since they like laying eggs in moist soil. Just watch that soil under it doesn't stay wet for too long. I would also make sure that top dressing is just gravel; if there are any finer materials mixed in (like sand or peat) or some areas not covered by it, fungus gnats will 'wiggle' in there. Once you repot into well draining gritty mix, you probably won't need any top-dressing. I keep it on because I use lots of perlite; and it tends to float to the top slowly. Gravel will prevent it from flying around if bit windy. There are ppl that are against using top-dressing. If soil below is water retaining, it probably won't help at all and I would agree about not using it. I am not sure how long before new growth - some plants take really long time. But it could be good idea to keep leaves on, even if broken or scratched- they will help makin more food. I would take off any that are mushy - rotting - waterlogged. Otherwise, they will eventually start drying up and shrivelling when old enough. Hopefully someone with much more experience with growing many different Haworthias will chime in....I have only few, and I did kill few with overwatering......See MorePagan
