Frosty Morn sedums flopping
Comments (11)Frosty Morn is by far my worst flopping sedum. Sedum alboroseum 'Mediovariegatum', a tall yellow variegated sedum which I bought at the same time in Spring 04 and planted on the opposite end of the same hot southwest facing & dryish (for me) bed near the house, is much bushier and upright than Frosty Morn. The only other Sedum that I have that is nearly as bad as FM is Vera Jamison, one of the older purplish varieties which always sprawls open. Because Vera is actually a quite short sedum, it has not been as troublesome as FM which is always intruding on its neighbors & getting chopped up by the lawnmower as it lays on the grass - at least in my garden. Since I really love the variegation on Frosty Morn and built a combo around it, I have put up with the flopping, but have to admit that I have taken to chopping if off by at least a quarter with hedge clippers or pruners several times a season to make it work. Fortunately the chopped pieces grow nicely when stuck back into the ground which helps give a fuller effect to what has been a rather thin dislay for me. IME, Frosty Morn has not proved to be a very robust sedum, I suppose because of the variegation. BTW, Autumn Joy has never flopped for me in any of its several locations in my yard (usually on hills in front of shrubs or big grasses that suck up all the moisture), even though I have read of others who have had problems with AJ, so I was actually quite shocked by the poor performance of Frosty Morn. Gardening sure keeps you on your toes!! LOL. Brunosonio - I don't mean to discourage you - maybe you have better conditions for FM than I do. Best Wishes, Leslie...See MoreI'm hooked on Sedum! Planting question
Comments (9)cactusmcharris - Thanks for the reply. All of these will be planted in the ground, none in pots. During the entire winter, they will be overshadowed by my house. The sun is behind my house for the entire day during winter. During summer, the sun is in the front of my house. So in summer they will get 8 hours direct sun per day, in winter they will get 0 hours direct sun per day. I have some boxwood shrubs, a crabapple and a couple other plants in this spot and they do good without any winter sun. I'm definietly going to plant them all around the yard, just incase the ones in the shade during winter don't make it. It just has me wondering now since they are almost all planted. I plant a lot of trees and I know that (at least from what I've planted) they require no direct sun when dormant. Only when they are growing. I wonder if sedums are the same way. Rina - Those all look great! Can't wait to see my little cuttings grow into something like those....See Moremoving my sedum
Comments (12)Hello Delaney: for dividing, the rule of thumb is to divide at the opposite time from when the plants bloom. So a fall blooming plant like Sedum Autumn Joy should be divided in the spring when it is first coming up. But perennials that bloom early in the spring should be divided and moved early in the fall, when the worst of the summer heat is behind you - yet there is still lots of time for the plant to get established. Good luck!...See Morecoral willow - what would look good with
Comments (2)My garden is a tiny postage stamp size, so I have room for only one coral willow which I planted by the garage. I have a Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' next to the willow. It is almost full grown and is having so may berries this year. I hope they'll last well into winter. This spring I added a Thuja orientalis kind of in front of the willow. On the other side of the willow, I have a red twig dogwood ' Ivory Halo'. Behind the dogwood is Thuj occidentalis 'Emerald Green' In front of the dogwood I have a clump of Sedum 'Autumn Joy' that received too much water sometimes. I plan to add a red/yellow twig dog wood to this ensemble once my layered twigs have rooted. I am quite happy imagining what that spot will look in January/February..and especially when it is covered with snow.....See MoreArtist-FKA-Novice Zone 7B GA
