Design Dilemma Home Decorating Remodeling

I need help picking baseboards

Hey all, I’m doing a remodel at my house. New kitchen, European white oak flooring, and stairs. Style of the home before was a bit more tuscan/traditional. Early 2000s Florida home. I guess I’m going for more of a transitional vibe.

So I am installing new baseboards throughout because I did not want to put quarter round. I’m faced with a dilemma. My cabinets are shaker, the stairs and posts will have cleaner lines, and I may change the interior doors to a shaker style in the future. So I kind of want to choose a baseboard that isn’t too ornate but won’t clash with the current crown molding, door casings and raised panel door. I’m looking for some pictures of baseboard that would look good now and in the future when I change the doors and casings? I can find the wood locally, I’m just desperate for ideas. Thank you!

That 5 1/4" Neck Base (the smaller of the 2 pcs you have on the floor) would be my choice.

Go at least the 5 1/2 and don't be afraid to try 6 1/2 or 7. I also replaced the short ranch style builder's grade a few years ago. I worried for quite a while that the 5 1/2 would be too much for my modest ranch with 8' ceilings. So glad that I went that route! I had to use shoe mold because of cracks that were showing at the end of my floors next to the wall, but I would not use it with carpet. Brushworks pointed out that the carpet is going to reduce the view of some of your baseboard - you might want to go at least 6-1/2. One recommendation I will make to others who might be considering shoe mold - don't do it unless you need to cover up cracks. While it does add another dimension to the trim, it also adds a very difficult piece that has to be caulked, makes painting more difficult, and is the perfect "ledge" to collect dust and lint. It also gets a lot of beating and banging from the sweeper and mops. Just my 2 cents. Tuesday

Very nice house! and I lke the colour of the siding but would paint all trim white along with the front door and garage. I suggest you update the ramp above the front door and porch with one that's not too formal looking, and replace your sconces with black larger ones. A natural fibre runner would look nice on the stairs. It looks like the windows at the back of the house are already painted white. To give your garage at the back more of a pool house look, I suggest you install a white pergola along the front and replace the garage door with a more interesting looking one. If not used as a garage, perhaps you can replace it with modern looking french doors with all glass panels.

The flooring contractor should be able to show you patch samples on your floor of what a clear coat would look like, and you could also sample some stains if you decide you want it darker. You should be trying to be two shades lighter or darker than your island, but have the same tone (yellow, red, green). Stains have undertones just like paint colors. You may have to stain the new and not the old in order to get the two to look alike, but an experienced floor refinisher should be able to work this out. I had an addition put on my previous house and had new wood floors next to old which were blended seamlessly - I didn't even have the old refinished. If you didn't know where to look for the transition you couldn't tell, and even knowing where it was the difference was very fine - and I'm pretty picky. There was a 4-5 foot opening between the two rooms with no threshold.

Thank you. I like the design of that one but not sure if it’ll go with the more modern doors when I replace them (too chaotic right now). I have 20ft and 10ft ceilings so I kind of want to go bigger to 7 1/4” (those are 6 1/4”). We don’t have to pick from the samples I have either

I used this one in 7-1/4" , but I also used the casing and crown from the same collection.
Check this company out of Tampa that has styles that are a bit different than those you see offered in the Lumber Yards. My builder ended up sourcing through his distributor at the Lumber Yard, as a custom order, so ask what they can order that is not their usual stock items.

If you want to be inspired by original shaker style, look for interior photos from places like Pleasant Hill, KY. Their baseboards often featured a simple cove at the top (and did use shoe molding at the floor, IIRC).

When I have a moulding decision I go to a real lumber yard, buy a significant length (4'?) of my favorite choices and then lay the choices in place for a few days. It helps me make the decision.

The problem I found, and I drove to several large real lumber yards, is that they all seem to only have the same old colonial mouldings that have been available for the last 50 years! If you want something a bit different, or more transitional, you need to look beyond the local lumber yard.

Unless you are changing the casings don't go too tall with the base or they will look even skimpier... Personally I would pause door replacement and replace casings and base simultaneously so you can choose better.

re chispas comment, my lumberyard stocks traditional because that is what sells, but they have a 1/2" thick catalog to order from and it comes in a week. They will even get physical samples.

Just like Hallett & Co, we have a lumber yard that offers lots of different molding styles, and also can make a duplicate of existing vintage molding. It is a locally owned, not a franchised, resource.
