Bringing brown to life
Comments (40)A larger rug will work fine so long as there is no corner of it in front of a doorway, and no edge bleeding into the natural path. People don't have any trouble stepping on and off the sides of a rug while moving through a space, but it throws off the scheme and confuses the walker to have to walk half on and half off the rug, or to choose to shift off the middle of the natural path to walk either on or off it. I'm not a fan of white walls with brown furniture in traditionally scaled rooms. I think it makes enlivening the scheme and balancing the colors much harder, and looks too much like an apartment, unless there is major architectural drama in the space....See MoreWhat products/steps will bring new life to wood in historic home?
Comments (4)Putting oil on top of an old varnish is asking for trouble down the road. You can always renew shellac without stripping, the same could not be said for topcoating with oil. Wax applied to shellac with 4/0 steel wool yields a very fine satin finish of amazing silkiness. Casey...See MoreStaircase railing - how to bring it back to life
Comments (6)Is that top of the hand rail brass or wood?..if it's brass, it's an easy fix....brasso and a roll of paper towels and lots of rubbing. I believe the reason it's 2 different colors is because it was lacquered and hands wore away the lacquer and allowed it to tarnish. the switch plates will clean up as well....but it's important to know the metal. a picture of the back side will help. If they are brass a soak in paint remover will remove the lacquer and allow them to "mellow" a bit. I think it would be a huge mistake to get rid of them.....if they are brass and not plastic they are magnificent! And really go with the ornate staircase. You don't have to use them right now....but in the future your tastes may change and you may want to re install them....See MoreBringing Life To A Kitchen With Knotty Pine (?) Cabinets
Comments (22)The cabinets are very dominant and to make the space come to life, a think a dark wall will work much better with all the orange tone wood...I'm thinking black. There isn't a lot of wall exposed, so you are not creating a dungeon; you are achoring the cabs...something like this photo to show the contrast: You have so little counter space, changing it out to black would be stunning and reasonable.
