Any ideas how I can hide or change the look of this?

I hate how the colums look. I’ve searched every where! Can someone please help?

Something I might try: paint the house and columns a darker charcoal color (similar hue as stone on lower level)— this would help the columns to recede more into the house/ landscape and give the house a more modern look. Paint the front door something memorable/ bright, and install some nice landscaping to frame the front door more as a focal point and draw the eye away from the house. Good luck!

Below is a visual of my suggestions:

- Enlarge the columns and install a railing to cut down on the height

- Install window boxes on the 2 windows on the right to make them appear longer (shade plants can work under the porch)

- Paint the siding and trim around the windows as shown

- Replace the front door to give an updated look

- Install a large black pendant and large street numbers

- Improve the landscaping and make a path from the front door towards either the street or driveway

As I suspected, the ball is way too small to be featured as the sole item on the stand. It looks like the perfect size for a coffee table or side table. Or it would work as a part of a grouping in a low planter with orchids and other tropical plants and greenery, for that British Colonial feel. Then that could be placed on the plant stand. If you do that, consider wrapping it with a textured fabric like a rough burlap, after painting a basecoat color on the ball to hide the oriental design. Or buy some of the hammered metal spray paints (I believe Krylon makes them) and do a copper or pewter or antique brass finish.

Love - You said "He said fine, he would have to leave work early, didn't want to "inconvenience me" yada yada." and "I asked him what made him say that and he just said "well, I can't leave work early today." WOW. So I guess in his MAN MIND that is his way of acknowleding that I wouldn't do it." The way I see it is this was his way of making you feel guilty for being a SAHM, but unwilling to help him out with his kid. Don't give in!!!! Be strong in that HE needs to do what HE needs to do for HIS kid, and it wouldn't have to be this way if the (in the words of Sweeby) bat-sh*t crazy b*tch hadn't come in your home and punched you. Pseudo said "....I guess my point was if he puts BM before you ... if you had a child with him where would he draw the line ...." This is totally what I have been thinking for a few months now, but could never get the courage up to say anything. Where will he draw the line? Your DD has already been subjected to so much from this woman, and he's not even her father! How much would he put a child of his own through? Example: my friend has a DD with her DH who has 2 DDs with a crazy BM. The DH is a SAHD to the little one (DD with my friend) and would take her with him to pick up the other DDs on his weekend. It became a habit that the BM wouldn't be home at p/u time and wouldn't answer her phone. He would wait around for them to return (afraid that if he left he wouldn't get to see his DDs). One time, the little DD was in the car and carseat for 4 hours while he tried to track them down and waited for them. 4 hours! My friend finally said "You can wait around for 4 hours if you want, but you will not have MY daughter sitting in a carseat for 4 hours while you sit in your car outside their home." Basically, he had no problems putting BM ahead of his new DD. Remember...the squeaky wheel gets the grease. You just have to start squeaking louder than her. Jupiter said "I think that they need to see their ex's as good mothers (even when they clearly are not) maybe to somehow reassure themselves for when they are with her." So, so, so, true. My DH knows BM is a back-stabbing liar. But then he says stuff like "well, BM says it's SD's decision and she asks her all the time if she wants to visit". So why would he believe that one statement when he's caught her in so may lies before? The only thing that makes sense is he NEEDS to believe she's a good mother. Jupiter also said "I too run into arguments where he lets her slide on things that he wouldn't with me..I try to give him the example that if it was anyone else in his life he would have told them to go to h#$% because normally in life you don't do favors for people who don't do for you let alone someone who puts him down as a father..." and Love said "But it just totally goes against DH's overall nature, which is so frustrating." This is the issue. Which personality is the REAL one? I have this same problem with DH and I'm starting to think the way he is with HER is his personality when he's vulnerable and that scares the crap out of me because I guess I rarely ever see him vulnerable. I agree with FD. When I am flexible and accommodating with X, it is usually in the best interest of DS, and I do the work. I rarely (if ever) ask DH to do anything for DS, although he would be willing, because I feel like DS is my sole responsibility since I am the parent.

Many of us continue to buy and/or use products that we probably don't really have any real use for and would probably be just as satisfied if we did not buy them. Still, we buy them with the notion that they are useful, or that they add something essential. But, do they really? I firmly believe that most of the things that the American public buys in regards to items such as "beauty" supplies, household cleaners, and laundry products are not only not really useful, but carry a large negative footprint in our lives, our personal resources, and our environment. All I am saying is that we owe it to ourselves and to our environment to think twice and again as to the real usefulness or need for so many of the things that we buy now days. So much of it is just that we have been sold the notion that these things are a necessary part of life. The major portion of what is on the shelves at the grocery stores, Walmart, and CVS are things that have not existed for...well, never before. Humanity has gotten along quite nicely without them. And, I would argue that the cumulative impact is negative and quality of life has not been enhanced by most of these things. I am in mid sixties and I look around at what people are buying and the it really occurs to me that I have lived this far, quite nicely, without most of that. I was in line at Costco the other day and the number of people around as I waited in line who had enough large packages of bottled water to build a wall was amazing! You would think that we had no potable water in our taps! That is just one example of senseless consuming. Don't they know that the "purified water" they are buying in those plastic bubbles is nothing more than tap water? Americans are trained to consume just about everything in mass quantities. Then, we have storage problems. For the record, I was not at Costco to purchase packages of paper towels that are as large as sofas. The pennies of savings are not worth the hassle of storing all of that stuff. And, most of it is not essential, nor is it really useful. Most of that perceived need is capitalist propaganda and social brain washing. It robs us of our money/resources and it reduces us to mindless consumers. Not buying so much stuff quickly addresses most storage issues. Once, we have decided which of those products really serves a need or a purpose in our life, we can eliminate buying or storing those that don't. First, there needs to be an honest answer as to it's real value, to us. Then, we need to give ourselves permission to step out of that mindset and NOT buy it. And, yes, this does apply to me, too.

Looking for ideas on how to update this small shed style 70s home, siding is new hardie plank with aluminum shutters , definitely needs a new roof and any other ideas are welcome. I'm stuck and can't think of anything. Considering a matte standing seam roof but also thought about should a porch be added over the front door. Thinking of removing louver shutter spacers perhaps or black windows. Different paint color maybe. I'm stuck for how to improve the exterior. Considering painting the fence black as well or a metal frame fence with wood slats. Thanks for any opinions.

In addition to something like the railing the pillars really need to look like thay are actually holding something up. There really should be a beam running across, visually even though it doesn't appear to be structurally necessary on your house

A white door with minimal trim to me always looks like the builder put no thought into it and it's just primed. The oval window is not in keeping with the style of the house either. Consider the advice offered by the other commenters and then think about a new door and beefed up trim around it, unless it's new, then just paint it. The color will depend on what else you decide to do. How is the entry lit? You definitely need some landscaping. It looks like you have almost no foundation plantings.

They do seem to hold up your roof, so here are some ideas to improve your façade:

--Remove your skimpy shutters.

--Paint the white siding cream to harmonize better with stone façade.

--Clad the beams in reddish cedar (or replace them with beefy cedar beams) so they blend in with the stone. Note in the "after" how the landscaping enhances the house. (Could you add a close-up of stone. Hard to see color.)

--Change out your door to dark red or cedar. The door is the wrong style for the house.

--As budget allows, make changes to landscaping, which is so flat and just ends at the house. Deeper, well planted garden beds will add interest to the front.

Not to criticize the person who posted this particular one, because they were posting examples of what the OP was asking about, but if you really look at this house, it was much more charming in the before than the after.

We have to stop looking at trendy, and what everybody is doing on Pinterest to make their houses look up to date and Instagram ready and riding the latest trend and really look at it, no matter how old it is and say "Does this house look good in it's original form?" There is nothing the matter with that red brick rancher before, except that it was not updated yesterday. Not everything needs to have something new tacked onto it every couple years. Fix the landscaping and call it done.

The OP's house could use a bit of work to make that porch look like it should have originally. That porch was a weak spot since it was built. But it doesn't need to be give the 2020s treatment either. Again, landscaping would help

The columns hold up the overhang of the roof. The Victorian door is bigger issue.Waht style of house do you like? You could with some $$$$ make this a bit grander and do fancy pillars but if you want them gone then you need magor work to be done. Take those silly shutters off and then post some pics of homes you like the look of . Then maybe you will get some real help. Please post the pics here in a commnet do not start another post .Landscping is a huge deal so maybe while you are thinking about the pillars start thinking of how to fix the yard.

I'd paint the siding and columns beige to blend in with the stone. Change the shutters to black, and the front door to either black or olive green. Or, paint the siding olive green, and use black for the shutters and trim, etc.
