rug styles for open concept home

I just bought a new rug for the dining room in my small open to concept home. I’m worried if it is working with the existing rugs. The kitchen runner, living room and entryway rugs are all alike, a popular ruggable pattern. I fell in love with this bold rug from Crate and Barrel but is it overpowering the room??? Thanks and suggestions welcome and encouraged. PS … I paid a lot for the new rug. Changes if needed would be on the other rugs. I can’t imagine the look on my husband’s face if I told him it wasn’t working. Lol

I LOVE tah rug now just do something simple and in the LR I would do a shag. Theothers just a color from the DR rug and forget a runner in the kitchen

I would cover all 3 windows with the same fabric and hang at the same height. This approach keeps an even sight line around the room. While you don't "have" to sew panels together, it will give the drapes a more finished look, hems will be even,etc. Lots of readers will suggest area rugs better than me. I would prioritize the rug first though. Pretty room.

Photos? the kitchen/dining colors don't sound like they match your LR furniture. UNLESS, the sofas are all ivory and you can replace the accessory colors. OR, alternatively, paint the kitchen wall a blue or green or soft white (which may be easier in the long run!).

Thank you very much. I figured it would be better to pair back and simplify things. My husband likes the cabinets but I thought about painting them black or grey, if I can't convince him it would be better to remove them completely. Love the idea about the black frame on the fireplace.

Paint Color Help for Open Concept Home

You could start with a professional colorist or start at a BM or SW store; I have met some paint folks who were genius with color. Our local Lowe's had a guy; really miss him. You can work with a color wheel, but I think that will confuse you by providing too much info. If you look through a paint store's color cards that feature colors you like and varying shades of them on the same card, you can take them home where the LED lighting will give you a better feel for how each works in situ. I suggest you each go to the store separately and select your paint color cards. Sit down and discuss, justifying your choices and see if you can narrow the cards down to 2-3 for each of you. Then you can order larger samples from www.samplize.com so you can see them on different walls in each room, in different lighting and weather conditions (sunrise, sunset, nighttime, mid-day, raining, sunny, gray) to nail down how they will work in your room, with your lighting. You can also acquire info on other colors, not on the cards, that are designed to work with them in a complimentary way. Now, part of selecting color (really the last step in most decor projects) is to consider your fabrics/textiles, which can't be changed as easily as paint can be. If you have your rugs, upholstery, art already it will be easier to do. If starting from scratch, you'll need to start mood boards for the furniture you plan to purchase. Do you have samples of the flooring you've chosen? That's part of your "board" too. It will be easier to make decisions on the individual rooms if the flooring is already installed. Placing the color cards with the board will help focus in on the best color for your place, and it may not be the one you have in mind right now. Be sure to take a cushion or matching pillow from the navy sofa with you as you shop for color and other fabrics/textiles. Big job but worth taking your time!

I have hardwood floors in my kitchen. Im a little worried about not having a runner to protect them. Our house is new.

The rug is fabulous!! definitely keep it. hard to really see the others but appears this rug is much more contemporary. i’d probably use something fairly solid in entry way so as not to compete. i started with rugs on my new wood floors in kitchen and quickly gave up. we haven’t had any issues in 7 years in terms of water other than a few small spots by dishwasher.

Too much visual stimulation with all these rugs.

If you feel you cannot live without a rug under the dining room table ( they are not a requirement) then stop with the pattern and get something classic and simple.

IMO the pendants are undersized for your table.

These grass shades would have been a nice touch.

I love the eclectic look of your rugs. The patterns do not seem to compete visually from what I can see, but I also do not prefer matchy-matchy. In fact, I like your lighting as well. You are doing a great job. Continue to follow your instinct. It’s working!

Your new rug looks awesome. I’ve recommended that rug to a few people here, glad to see how it actually looks in someone’s house!

I think all of your rugs are fine together, and much more interesting and attractive than a bunch of plain ones. I agree with everything Mrs Ted said. We’re outliers — most on these boards get antsy at mixing colors and patterns. ;)

If I was going to change any rug, it would only be the entry one. I think a plainer one there would be a nice bridge between the dining and living room rugs, and they’d stand out more that way.

Your kitchen runner is so pretty … I’m another who will always have a rug in my kitchen.

Your lights are not too small for your table, I don’t understand that comment at all. I think the oversized lights shown as examples look ridiculous. That’s a strange trend I hope is over soon.

I like the rugs together, but would change the circular one in the foyer to a much smaller sisal. As in door mat size.
