Cracked Flu Gas Fireplace
Comments (1)I'm confused. The flue, as I understand it, is the damper that closes off the vent that goes up the chimney. It is typically made of metal, probably cast iron. If yours is made of tiles and has a cracked tile, the problem would be that, when you want to close off the chimney, when you do not use the fireplace, you cannot close it off all together. In cold weather, you would feel a draft, and you would be losing heat. That would be as bad as having a door that does not seal properly. Similarly, in warm weather, you would be losing air conditioned air, if you have air conditioning. Do I understand you correctly?...See Moreheat from wood burning stove cracking wall
Comments (2)Who installed the stove? Was it installed by a professional to all fire codes? It sounds to me that it's too close to a combustable surface. And if that's the case do NOT burn the stove until the situation has been rectified! As far as the ceiling goes, is it cracking near the stovepipe? If so, is there an insulating collar at the ceiling? Most house fires start at the collar where it goes through a wall or ceiling. The fire starts long before you're even aware of it. Contact the dealer and have a rep come out for an inspection. See if you can get heat shields for the stove. And if this is not possible then install a non combustable surface behind and above the stove where the chimney goes up through it. You sound like a house fire just waiting to happen! And if your homeowner's insurance is unaware of the stove, you may be denied coverage in the case of a catastrophe....See MoreCrack in my gas furnace heat exchanger
Comments (27)I find it interesting you have searched for a three year old thread in order to post your comment. There is some elemement of a scare tactic in tagging and shutting down a furnace. The contractor does want you to buy a new furnace from him. But the dangers of a cracked heat exchanger are very real. There is a legal liability that an HVAC contractor shut down a furnace which show signs of being dangerous. There thousands of furnaces in use at this moment that have cracks and the homeowners don't know it. These furnaces continue to operate until they eventually fail for some other reason. This is not a reason to ignore the issue. Heat exchangers crack due to excessive heat. This could be caused by not changing the filter or poor installation. There is a high heat limit switch that will shut down the furnace, but it does not guarantee it will prevent the heat exchanger from cracking. There is no detector which can signal a crack in metal. I suppose a carbon monoxide detector could be built into the furnace. The detector would probably have many false positive readings as the furnace cycled on and off. If an HVAC technician says you have a cracked heat exchanger, then get a second opinion if you doubt his findings. It is better to be safe than sorry....See MoreHeat Lamps Crack Granite?
Comments (14)"Cracks in granite because of some lights? Don't make me laugh....Improper installation is the ONLY CAUSE." Stone Tech: Thanks for proving my point. The lights heat the granite and it expands. There is no design accommodation/proper installation for said expansion, so the granite fails. If you've got another theory as to why all the other same granite, (installed the same but no lights) hasn't failed, I'd love to hear it. Coincidence?...See MoreMarina Lehane
